The New Dictionary of Farrier Terms and Technical Language.

Updated and reformatted for 2003!

Why a Dictionary?

All technical professions eventually develop a language of their own, and farriery is no different. I recall seeing Duckett's dot mentioned in articles years ago, but the authors assumed that the readers knew what the term meant, and didn't bother to explain. Then there was some discussion before a local contest as to whether there was a difference between fullering and creasing or between a heel calk and a blocked heel. Webster wasn't much help in these situations.

As farriery keeps pace with the times, many farriers complain about the scientific terminology that is becoming commonplace in our magazines and literature. Today's horseshoers might find themselves dealing with terms like arteriovenous anastomoses and epithelium while trying to read the latest research papers or listening to a presentation at the Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium. Even if the farrier has the veterinary texts available to explain such terms, the usage is often somewhat different when scientific terms are used in relation to farriery.

Then there are the horse owners who would like to be able to converse intelligently with their farrier about their horses' hoofcare. Many of the books available for horse owners are written by trainers, riding instructors, and vets. As good as many of them are in other respects, they all to often contain a great deal of misinformation about farriery.

It became clear to me that there was some call for an authoritative reference of the language of our profession. So, after a great deal of research, I published the Pocket Dictionary of Farrier Terms and Technical Language in early 1994.

The Pocket Dictionary... prompted a great deal of response and many useful suggestions from farriers and horsemen. My response was to publish the New Dictionary of Farrier Terms... at the end of 1995.
