Attendance and Probation Policies

It is not our policy to terminate enrollment of any student, but for the good of each student and this class, the following rules must be observed:

Any student absent more than 4 (four) days, with 5 (five) tardies equaling one day, will be terminated. When excess absences are excused, each student may re-enroll in any future class session in order to finish the said course. Make up work will be allowed for all excused absences.

Students enrolled must be placed on probation if not maintaining a passing grade after three weeks, and terminated if work is not brought up to a 75. Any excessive abuse of O.S.H.S. rules, including insubordination, use of alcohol or drugs, or serious misconduct, will be cause for termination of enrollment.

All O.S.H.S. students desiring re-admission after termination must meet the terms and policies set forth in the current school enrollment agreement, catalog and attachments. Previously paid tuitions will be credited to the student's current account. All students requesting re-entry must have paid any tuition outstanding to the school. In considering maximum time for course completion after re-entry, the student must complete the units of instruction to be taken in not more than 1.5 times the normal time frame for completion of the same instruction.

STUDENT TERMINATION DATE: The termination date for refunds is the last day of actual attendance by the student. O.S.H.S. asks for notice of cancellation or a withdrawal in writing. A $25.00 penalty is charged at this time. If the student is below legal age, the parent or guardian must notify O.S.H.S. in writing. O.S.H.S. will refund monies due a student whether or not the student provides notice of cancellation or withdrawal.

Admission Requirements

Enrollment is offered to any student who is physically capable and is not under the jurisdiction of any secondary school. No credit will be allowed for any previous training or education.

To enroll in O.S.H.S. each student must send $250.00 deposit with completed application. Deposits are nonrefundable.

APPLICATION OF POLICY

Any monies due the applicant shall be refunded within thirty (30) days from cancellation or failure to appear on or before the first day of class. Any monies due the student shall be refunded within thirty (30) days from the last date of student attendance.

The Leave of Absence Policy for O.S.H.S. is as such: O.S.H.S. must have a Leave of Absence Request signed by the student who is listed as being on leave. If the student does not return following the Leave of Absence period (not to exceed 100 calendar days), refunds must be made within thirty (30) calendar days from the end of the Leave of Absence. When a student takes a Leave of Absence, under no circumstances can a refund exceed 145 calendar days from the last date of actual student attendance.

EXTRA EXPENSES

Items of extra expense to the student such as housing, board, instructional supplies or equipment, tools, student activities, laboratory fees, service charges, rentals, deposits, and all other extra charges need not be considered in tuition refund computations provided they are separately identified in the enrollment agreement, catalog, and in other published data furnished the student before enrollment.

GRADING AND SATISFACTORY PROGRESS

A minimum passing grade of 75% out of a possible 100% is required on all examinations and assignments. If a student scores below our high standards, we will work with him/her as much as needed until a passing grade is achieved. A student is dismissed by the school when it is clear that he/she is unable to satisfactorily acquire the knowledge and skills required to be a competent horseshoer.

Graduation Requirements

O.S.H.S. uses a progressive grading system wherein a student has a weekly score, and at the end of the course a three part test including a written, forge, and shoeing test is used. These grades will determine passing or failing (passing score is 75% out of a possible 100). Upon successful completion of training in basic horseshoeing and basic forge work you will receive a diploma from O.S.H.S.

O.S.H.S. presents the students with their diploma at the end of the 29th day of class. A student then has the choice of leaving that day. If a student chooses to leave that day the 30th day is counted as an absent day. If a student has 3 unexcused absences that student is required to attend the 30th day. The reason O.S.H.S. has offered this choice to all students is the majority of the students have employment obligations and the extra day of travel time is a must.
