: I've asked my farrier about Equi Pak. He said it sounds like silicone. Is it the same?
: If not, can you recommend a supplier in the east that would sell it to me for my farrier to use during my horse's next shoeing? Thank you, Tracy
Hi Tracy!
Thank you for your questions. About the only similarity between Equi-Pak and silicone is that they both
set clear. Here is a comparison:
EQUI-PAK (urethane)
- Inert, has no deleterious effect on the sole
- Shock absorbent
- Can be used with or without a pad
- Sets in 25 seconds, horse can be used immediately
- Remains flexible and supportive of the frog
- Adheres to the sole, and if used, the pad
SILICONE
- Contains acid which creates a wet, smelly, cheesy sole
- Transmits shock up the leg
- Must be used under a pad
- Sets in 24 hours, material oozes out, horse needs to be stall bound
- Becomes hard
- Comes loose allowing moisture and debris to become entrapped
