: : What sizes do the new steel NBS come in? Are they going to be the same as the original ones?

: : And are you using these shoes all round or only on fronts? I've never seen anywhere that is says how to shape these shoes to a very distorted hoof. Are you shaping this shoe to mimic the distortions but with slight alterations and then gradually bringing the hoof back to where it should be or do you just round the edges where the shoe fits wide?

: : Sharon

: So far I have only used them in front. I find that on most hind feet a modified Saint Croix Eventer still fits best.On those I use a front pattern St Croix, and forge it to the hind, nice and broad, and set it back to where it needs to be. I like to use front pattern St Croix better on hind feet because the toe nail holes are farther apart.
: I find shaping the NBS quite easy, if I have to 'shape' at all....:-). In fact many I can put on directly out of the box after checking level, or with a tap or two to open or close them. On a few I do turn the heels in a bit.
: With severely distorted feet, I find all my landmarks that tell me where the coffin bone really is inside that foot, then shoe to that.(sole callous, apex of frog, widest part of foot, etc.) If there is a whole bunch of foot left over the frontof the shoe, I simply bevel the overhang from the bottom, and dress the flare at the bottom half of the wall (but NEVER "dub" the wall back to the front of the shoe). You will find that the next shoeing out, there will be far less hoof hanging over the shoe in front, because the hoof capsule is reshaping itself. Dealing with lateral flares, I shoe to there the foot ought to be, nail high, and dress off the flares. They generally don't come back after that, especially if the frog is healthy and supporting the bottom of the foot. Patty

Ok, I have used them on a few horses in front and like you, I like a St Croix on the hind and depending on the foot, I will use a front or a hind shoe and shape it to what I want. I do put a rocker toe on the hinds though (on most but not all horses)which I have only discovered one other person that does this. Learned a new idea on forging the rocker today by doing it over the horn instead of on the flat of the anvil. Makes a nice job of it.

Thanks,

Sharon
