: We have a horse that fractured it's coffin bone and we put a regular shoe with pad and filled it with silicone. It is time to change the shoe and we want to put an EDDS shoe on and we are worried about the impact of nailing a new shoe on and losing the ground we've gained. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Actually there is a very specfic protocol for using EDSS to treat fractured coffin bones, and it is somewhat different from applying it in other circimstances.
Important items specific to fractured bones which differ from normal protocol are several, including include such things as preparing the foot so there will be NO support to the sole or frog to help insure the segments of the bone remain as stable as possible so they can heal together.
There is a special instruction video available specifically for using EDSS on P3 fractures, available for about fifteen dollars and it strongly suggest your farrier get one of those special videos before he applies EDSS for that purpose.
Also the EDSS shoes are available in a "Cuff" design that can be screwed or glued on, so there is no trauma from nailing, and as well wil help stabilize the hoof capsule even more to help "cast" the bone. The folks at the EDSS offices will be glad to personally advise your farrier about all the options if he calls. The phone number there weekdays is 719) 372-7463 (372-SHOE) Patty
