Dear Steve,
The notches create a dirt on dirt hold when the barrel horse makes the quick turns. In other words it helps prevent side slip. The shoe was designed by Richard Dunivant, a farrier who works with barrel horses most of the time. Richard started notching shoes and found that he could move them up from a half second to a full second or more by notching the shoes. Lyndee Stairs won the WPRA Rookie of the Year title in barrel racing 2002 using the Sidewinder shoes. They work.......
