: We've had an ex-racer for about six months and he's got terrible feet. My farrier (quite educated and certified as well) has recommended a barefoot period in the hopes of hardening and subsequently growing better hooves. Despite supplements, great diet, good weather, and 24 hr turnout, it's not working. He's sore, he's lost hoof wall, and is now chipping the tiny feet he's got. Other than that he's a very talented young gelding!
: My question is this: is there a type of shoe that we could put on that does not require nails - like the glue ons? They would need to be strong because he is turned out, not stalled. He just doesn't have much to nail to. Any suggestions?
: Thanks!
Dear Lisa,
I would recommend our Lite Champion or if the feet are very small, our Sidewinder glued on. Gluing aluminum shoes requires someone that has done this type of work many times before. The glue can be used to fill the break outs in the hoof as well. Your farrier sounds like he is very good, but he may not be familiar with gluing shoes. I know that Farrier's Formula grows feet and if you use Sole Pack liquid two to three times a week all over the hoof below the coronet band and sole and bulbs of the heels, this will medicate and stimulate growth. If he is sore , pack his feet with Sole Pack Packing and put him in a boot or wrap with duct tape for a day or two. If you want me to locate a farrier that knows how to glue shoes in your area, email me at thorobred@pobox.com
