Was the frog pad essentially supporting all the weight?
If you take the wall out of weightbearing in a mature horse it will grow from coronet to ground (at toe), in about 2 or 3 months. I've personally seen that happen with a foundered horse who sloughed his hoof capsules and have read about that when intentional ablations are done at vet clinics.

Hard to tell under a bandage, but yes I intended to have the frog pressure pad bear the weight and obviously where the wall doesn't reach the ground, it is not bearing weight.

The best things about the good old days -- I wasn't good and I wasn't old.

The older I get, the more horses I shoe, the fewer things that I can absolutely, positively fix.

Yesterday I evaluated 'Imani', the foal with the flexoral laxity case I was documenting in this thread.

After removing her second set of "breadboard shoes" and evaluating the condition of her hooves, limbs and movement, it was decided that Imani would no longer need orthotic assistance.

Her legs appear generally normal. The foot is now fully weight bearing on the distal surface with no gap at the toe. Surprisingly, the solar surface of the foot never presented any problems with bacterial/fungal infection. The tissues were clean, healthy and relatively dry. Most surprising was the amount of hoof wall growth over the last two weeks. I trimmed nearly a quarter inch off the wall.

Without a matching control study, there is no means by which to conclude that the shoeing protocol "corrected" this foal.

What I can conclude is that the package provided a means by which the foal could move and develop in a comparatively normal way. Without the package, movement was severely inhibited, hoof capsule distortion was severe due excess force at the heels and trauma at the heel bulbs and caudal aspect of the pastern. The package resolved those secondary problems.

The case results demonstrated that this kind of flexoral problem is due to inadequate muscle-tendonous structural development versus lack of bone length.

Follow-up protocol plan is to trim the foal as needed every few weeks. There is still some concern that this foal will be predisposed to an under-run heel condition as a consequence of the early laxity problem. It is hoped that routine trimming will assist in reducing that risk.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed their thoughts and ideas to help me assist this foal. I'm hopeful the protocol may assist others who encounter similar problems with forelimb laxity.

Here's a video clip taken yesterday after removing the package and trimming her feet.

Cheers,
Mark

Mark, great job and an excellent outcome!. I hope you'll continue to update us over the coming months on this case.

Thanks to all for the kind thoughts and especially for all the advice.

I'm also interested in how this foal will turn out in the coming months. While I have some confidence that the flexoral issues may be behind the foal, I'm curious as to the long term effect, if any, on her hoof conformation.

Presuming the horse is still on my books at that time, I'll follow up with longer term results.

Thanks again to all.

Cheers,
Mark

Please do, Mark. I have a theory based on observation of endurance horses that moderation in structure is good. The rough riding horse that is beating a rider to death is also beating himself to death and tends toward early arthritis, but the long pasterned horse that has a Cadillac ride and is soaking up all the shock in the soft tissues is prone to soft tissue injury (not as career ending as osteo injury tho). Chances are you won't follow this little guy to maturity and use, but even early observation could be interesting.
