Hi, I am new to forum and want an opinion.

I compete endurance. I have a well bred, 100% sound, fit healthy horse that is just not suited to endurance re attitude. He is just not a forward moving horse. He is fit, fresh, but is just not forward moving. Purebred arab 8 yo well bred, sire exported to UAE. He has NO desire to go! He is well schooled, behaved etc Vet checked, NO soundness issues just no desire to go.....Opinion of other endurance competitors, horse just doesn't have the drive to be competitive.

So I have looked at another horse, lovely horse. Well bred, competed at 80 km successfully, vetted through sound, forward, active, keen, big mover BUT club foot. 8 yo anglo, 15.3hh, has competed with heavyweight rider 106kg, I am light to medium weight depending which saddle I use 70-75kg. This is a quality horse that I would not be able to afford if he wasn't club footed!!!!

I want him for endurance. I have a good farrier. I am an equine massage therapist and so can work on associated muscle problems. I am light weight. I am very proactive regarding health, soundness, etc....

If a horse appeared sound and was everything you wanted except for a club foot what would you do!!!

Thanks
Karen Vickers

Get X-rays before making any deal ...if others have tried in the past to reverse the problem there is a chance that P3 may have suffered ...

The management is high and the risk is high ....but others have gone with a club footed horse and done really well ....ask Mr Evens :)

I agree with Ray's advise. Get rads first.

When you stand behind this horse on flat level ground with the horse's cannon bones vertical, and lool down his top line, please describe what you see when looking at his hips and shoulders.

When asked to canter, does he take both leads smoothly and willingly? Does he maintain the gait smoothly and willingly on either lead? Does he forge and if so is it bi-lateral? How well does he fare against the competition? What kind of condition scores does he get?

From the photos, the club does not appear severe, perhaps a grade 1 or possibly, 2, so, depending on the purchase price and rads, I would be very tempted to take a chance on this one.

I think I'm the guy Ray means - small typo. I owned a club for over 20 years, bought her cheap as a five year old not even broke to lead. Competed successfully at both combined training and endurance. She had some body issues that needed massage early on, but after being under saddle and forced to use both sides of her body equally the need went away. She had the typically larger shoulder on the non-club side meaning saddle fit was a problem, but got that handled with basically a treeless saddle. Shoeing takes some dialing in and consistency. I never went more than 80 km with her, but that was just a phase in my life when I didn't have time. Nothing to do with her.

I've had several other clubs in my practice that did well and one prominent lameness vet once said "there are a lot of unilaterally clubby endurance horses out there doing hundreds of miles a year W/O a bad step as long as no one tries too hard to fix them".

Get x-rays and go for it if all is right.

The best things about the good old days -- I wasn't good and I wasn't old.

The older I get, the more horses I shoe, the fewer things that I can absolutely, positively fix.

Thanks for feedback.

At this stage horse does not show marked difference in height or muscle development in shoulder.

I have not ridden horse as I didn't wan't to fall in love if the club foot was a no go! Apparently he does not strike off on both canter leads evenly, but he has had no "schooling", has been fittened for endurance on a jogger, and the lady currently riding him is a novice rider and so I am unsure if canter lead is her problem or his.

Vet reports after ride, no concern with gait, there was slight soreness in back, but not in shoulder area, under the back of saddle and a Veterinary chiropractor has looked at horse and felt back soreness was due to heavy rider and lack of conditioning to carry rider. Horse was fittened on jogger not ridden! and then ridden by a heavyweight rider over 80km.

Owner had not had problem with club foot, she saw horse as yearling and he already had club foot at that stage. Current farrier felt that he didn't have problems with club foot as he respected that it is natural for this horse, and to try and change it would cause more problems.

Horse came 4th last time out, he has limited outings, 3x 80km, as they export horses and he isn't suitable due to club foot there is no point in them continuing. Good heart rate etc I do not want horse for resale, I am a little fish in a little pond!! Horse will not be expected to do huge numbers of rides, 6 - 10 per year?? I certainly won't be competing out of state and may not even compete out of my area. I enjoy riding out, I live near state forest and ride most days.

A friend has a horse of similar quality and knocked back an offer of $25,000, this horse is $2,500. Most good endurance horses are sold overseas, big business. I don't necessarily want to win, I just don't want to vet out! I want to have fun and enjoy riding. All my horses also do a bit of dressage training as well which seems to help with flexibility and soundness.

Thanks for your advice

i shoe one with 3 "clubbed feet". $500K was the first offer of Kippy for those who know. H.P. a swall legged endurance horse won the 75 at Gladstone for the Queen. Quit compainling and go to work with you horse and your sport.
