Shod a 6 yr old warmblood mare today. Horse is quite light type TB-like hooves, not flat soles though but weak heelsand say medium thin walls. I have shod the horse many times before w/o any problems.
Today i removed Equilibriums, decided to return to old shoes, Kerck DF. I cut a little notch w half round nipper for clip. Burned a little mark for clip w hot shoe. little bevel w grinder. hammered down inside to avoid sole pressure. Horse did not react negative to nailing or clenching. Six nails each shoe Walked to her stall perfectly relaxed without problem.
Three hours later trainer calls and says that horse is lame in both front feet.
I went back. First I removed toe nails to see if it made any difference. Still lame.
Removed shoe. Checked nail placement. no tight nailing. Horse still lame walking on concrete floor. Removed toe clips and grounded away even more to really ensure no sole pressure. nailed shoe on in last nail holes only. No difference, still lame.
Finally nail on shoes with nails placed further out. Left horse slightly better but still lame.
Please advice. How do i proceed?

If changing the nails made a difference the it could have been the first nailing

That was my first thought. I nailed "safer" the second time even though i couldn't se that first nailing was too coarse.
Strange since I have never had to be extra careful when nailing this horse before.

Who knows what was done with the horse between the time of shoeing and when the trainer called .....this shows how much trust is in this game ,also if mistakes are made how much good relations pay off ;)

I guess I'd show up with a set of hoof testers, and some pads. tape the pads on before shoeing, to see if that makes a difference.

Ask what the horse had to eat between the time you shod him and he presented lame. ;) As well as Ray suggested, what did the horse do before your second visit?

I bet the trainer worked the horse hardly later of shoeing. It looks a "road founder",inflamation of the laminae when the horse walks barefoot on the hard surface or the sole is compressed against the shoe.

Cold water, fenilbutazone and standing on the box during two or three days.

I would try just tapeing the shoe on with duct tape or elasticon tape.
Walk the horse with the shoe on but no nails.
If sound ,then you know it's something to do with the nails.
If still lame then could be trimmed a bit short or like Gabino say's .

To long of a burn on a already short foot..inflamed..the clinching just pulled up tight ..when moved nails you let some pressure of and that's why a little better but stil tender..just a guess ..been there before..I go to foot with a real hot red sh oe..I'm on and off the foot before smoke gets to the horses head..and the foot has a full burn..all just a guess..

Did you use hoof testers to help with your evaluation?

Youmay need rim pads and Durasole.

Horses with chrinically thin soles can pull this stunt - "I have been doing this horse for [months - years] and all of a sudden he is lame" - quite often. Radiographs will show you how little sole you may have and this needs immediate address before you literally "run out of foot" and cannot recover it. A thin sole by default has a poor blood supply and has difficulty keeping pace with use, wear, and/or trim cycles. Some can require very careful maintenance and will sneak up on you when you least expect it. This scenario may not necessarily be the case for this horse, but it would be wise to consider it.

Sole depth is realitive; even with rads. Numbers don't mean shat to a horse........

Sole depth is relative, but there is sufficient data available now to have a good idea of how much sole depth a horse should have along with other parameters. The best determining factor is to have a horse that is performing well and have a set of radiographs taken that are done in a standard fashion so they can be compared to future radiographs of this same horse. This is a procedure done routinely in many practices today. This has served me quite well in many otherwise mild cases that could be difficult to diagnose.
