Poor feet 17 Aug 2011 07:01 #1

To celebrate the new picture settings Steve endorsed us with, some on a Norwegian rescue that I was asked to fix at way below average pay

For some reason especially Norwegian pony's often have really bad feet. I'm not talking about poor feet that force you to nail really close, so most nails encourage the horse to stay oncomfortable for like a day or so. No this is about the really bad ones that you nail into but feel like cardboard. Clinching them rips away most of the wall underneath, feet like that. Shoes loosen up in matters of weeks, where months is the norm.

This is such a pony. A rescue to boot. Since it is a fine pony without any issues other than its feet chances are it was put up for slaughter or adoption just because of its poor feet. This ******** me off, because all that shoer at the time had to do, is ask for help. No he or she would rather see that pony killed because he or she lacked the experience to shoe feet like these. Well, maybe is was an owner thing rather than anything else, who knows?

The package was a aluminum wedge shoe (no bar, too expensive) a leather pad, a thin aluminum plate and hoofpack.

The shoe was made a banana shoe, to minimize rotational forces acting upon the hoofwall. A banana has less ground contact at any one time, so the friction is greatly reduced as well, lessening the forces acting through the nails on the hoofwall. The leather pad was used to improve the quality of the fit. I found years ago that even compared to a well fitted shoe an added leather pad makes removal of the shoe a lot harder. Like it "sticks" more to the foot. (Tip: always soak the shoe with leather pad at least 15 minutes in water, prior to nailing it on.) The aluminum plate that I had lying around was not too expensive and provided enough stiffness to do without the bar. Poor feet like these need all the help they can get. Supporting the sole and frog is important to reduce forces acting upon the poor hoofwall.

Pony was off before, sound walking away. There still is a chance I'll get a phone call though, because the pony may have been hotnailed by me. No way of telling, walking off better is no guarantee there's no nail pinching.

Nice work Ron.

Was the leather pad a full or rim pad? If it was a full pad, why did you add the aluminum plate?

Still trying to learn.

Cheers,
Mark

For support a bar shoe would have been better, but I'm trying to make a living too, and I do rescues on a regular basis. So instead of using a bar shoe I used a thin aluminum plate that once was a road sign I was told. That plate provided the stiffnes I was looking for. The full leather pad added to that stiffnes and provided extra "hold" to the fit as well.

Ron,
Is that horse going back to live in the mud? Has he been rescued to better living conditions?
I've never seen a Norwegian Fjord with such bad feet. The ones I do, are pulling carriages and their feet are so bloody hard I have to nail them up with 5 reg head; 5 cty and 5 slim blade capewells bend.

It started raining big time when I shod it. We have Norwegians at every corner here in Holland, they're more common than windmills around here :D And those numbers got to be that high by breeding as much as possible with no eye to quality for decades. Most of those end up with issues that were unheard of 30 to 40 years ago, The good ones are the best pony's you can find.
