IDK! My idea is to gain ground on a compromised foot which I wasn't able to accomplish with setting shoes back, sole support, wedges......

The feet I posted at the beginning of the thread, I tried the usual methods for the past year and made no ground at all. In about a month with the rockerbars I'm already gaining ground. And that's with doing things that are generally not accepted such as wedging the heels with no frog support.

My other concern is that the few rockered shoes I've seen with a flat foot surface like the one in this thread (or Todd Walker's shoe in the hoofwatch video) have a fairly small radius at the apex of the rocker rather than a large radius curve.

I'm only using them on hind feet. The goal is to have the foot land flat. Not land heel first and have to roll over the shoe. I think landing heel first could be a little dangerous which is why I don't build the wedge of the shoe up like you would in a competition shoe. I throw a wedge pad on to finish it of. So if the foot does roll back the wedge pad will reduce the actual amount of the roll.

You can keep the weight of the shoe down fairly easily. If you bump and 1" into each branch just make sure you draw that much out in front and back of it.

In any case it looks like you made some progress. Hairline looks tons better and the back of the foot looks to have more mass to it too. Also looks like you had quite a bit of foot to come off.

I've been hanging a lot more barshoes lately, specifically in instances where I previously wouldn't have thought them necessary, and have been getting good results even despite the often lack of frog support.

Have you had this horse in barshoes before or was this the first time?

Joey is it because of the extremely hard ground due to the drought or some other reason? Been thinkin I might need to do a few more in them too, because of the concussion problems..??:)

It rare that I put barshoes on much of anything. I could cut the bar out of this shoe and I don't think the horse would notice since it doesn't touch anything.

No, stuff like horses with hard lateral landing fronts, weak heels with atrophied frogs, etc. I'm sure they effect concussion, but I don't know if it's for the worse or better. I'm on a kick about "improving capsular integrity" at the moment. Although it's been a while since this whole concept crept into my head, but a few months ago I got slapped in the face with it when I had a plantation shod walker that started getting heel sore when the horse got trimmed down and put into lite shods. (also a hard lateral landing horse)

My theory was the mass of the plantation shoe was holding the foot together and making up for a lack of structural integrity. After pulling that massive shoe the foot was allowed to flex and tear itself up. Put him into some egg-bars and he went sound in a couple days.

In so many words. LOL.

What do you mean by "will be when the shoes are read in October"? I'm not quite making sense of it?

I am thinking he means if we dont get some rain and the ground get softer, you will see the effects of load and breakover when the shoes wear out???Am I close Uncle Jay??:D

Actually I think it was the first half of the sentence that messed me up.

I'm guessing he meant "maximum distribution of full impact and load will be when shoes are read in october".

I figured this using my "Jamesons-English" dictionary.

chris bunting in gray

how many of you have applied a rocker/bar shoe ?

Raising hand.

and how many of you can forge one ?

Raising hand. (Just don't ask me to swage half round, especially titanium - it's a female dog.)

i know several can , but i reckon those that can make them have not needed to apply them ,

I think that'd kinda depend on one's custom.

and as usual those that cannot make them have the most experience using them .

You know this because?

strange life isnt it ?

The longer I live, the stranger it gets. :)
