i started working on an older gelding a few months ago. he is off and on lame. i dont think the problem is in his feet but i would like thoughts and help on this. he stands on his toe, on the diagonal of RF and LH, so these feet have taken on a club foot look. the other diagonal both feet look fine. although he stands on his toe, i trim both of those feet just like a normal trim, taking alot of the heel. once i do this, we can get him to stand on both of those, heels touching the ground, and resting the other legs. it doesnt bother him to stand that way. ive been trimming him every 3-4 wks.
the owner says that she has had problems with this gelding for quite a while, but now the problem has become way worse, as far as him staying sound.
the first pics are the LH. the lateral view shows how he stands, normally, on that foot and his RF. the third pic is his RF after i have trimmed it.
thanks in advance for any ideas, thoughts, and help.:)

Technically speaking, if he's non weightbearing in the heels he would be a grade 3 club foot.

It's common for diagonally opposed feet to share club footed tendencies.

If he's not weight bearing on the heels there are a myriad of lamenesses that present as a result. Shoe him with some wedges on the club feet and see how the lameness does.

Agree with Joey, if you watch you will see the diagonal pairs match up pretty regular. When you fit your shoe maybe be a bit generous with the fit in the heels as well.

i agree with you joey. what i cant figure out with this horse, though, is that i can trim him and then he will bear weight on his heels just fine and be relaxed. it doesn't seem to bother him to bear weight, while i am there watching him.
if i took as much heel off of other club footed horses that i have, as i do with him, they would never come close to bearing weight on those feet.

Well then he's probably just a -3 club. But anytime they will not load the heel it's generally accepted as a grade 3 club.

Just because the horse has enough weight to override this and drop his heel when the limb is loaded doesn't mean there's not a problem.

Since you're on concrete try a trick I learned from Donnie Walker. Have the horse stand square, then scoot the club foot back so that the toe of the club foot is paralell to the heel of the other foot. If you can slide a business card under the heel of the clubfoot he needs to be wedged, and I just about guarantee you this one does.

Don't worry about the angles of the foot, a mis-matched sound horse will beat a lame symetrical horse any day of the week. From what I can tell in the pictures I'd be inclined to wedge all four. I'd go for some Castle Bar Wedges with frog supports. (just make sure you file/grind the frog pad on the foot side until they don't pressure the foot anymore)
