I get 'em flat.

When I put 'em down, if the barn's floor is level, the foot is level. :D

IIRC, there have been several studies that concluded that generally speaking, horses tend to land slightly lateral to medial and that has to do with the slight differences in the shape and size of the condyles of the cannon and pastern bones.

It appears that we agree that there is a difference between flat and level, so again the question is raised, "level to what?" It also begs the question "can a foot be level in a canted plane?" IOW, what spatial orientation is referred to when we say the foot is 'level' ? And, can we only look at the foot in one dimension to determine level? If so, which dimension, and, why? :o :)

Are you sure? :) To which structure(s) are you referring? Considering the architecture of the hoof, is not not also possible that the structures seek their own 'level' regardless of the substrate on which they are standing? :)

They have been putting on healthy stride clinics in the amish country down here. I have been going for amusement mainly:D. They wedge the horse on one side or the other with the foot trimmed flat which would make the shoe unlevel to the leg. Come back in six weeks look down the leg with the shoe still on and most of them have balanced thereselves. Pull the shoes and the foot is higher on the side that didn't have the wedge.

The barn floor of course.

True. I've seen floors collapse in old barns and seek their own level. ;)

Well thats a good thing. When I saw the guy 6 or 7 years ago he couldn't rasp a foot flat if his life depended on it.

Is it truly level when you put the hoof down? Check for diagonal imbalance that isn't always clearly seen but WILL cause regrowth of higher wall on one side or the other.

Some good pictures and some good work, a lot of those pics are not oblique to the horse and its very difficult to be accurate with the analysis from the lines drawn on some of them. At best it is difficult to draw conclusions from 2D photos of a 3D objects but when the horse isn't square on its impossible.
