TOPIC: Z Bar and G Bar

If the heel drops lower than the hoof surface of the shoe much more than a very small amount I would expect the existing crack/tear to expand or a new quarter crack to develop.

I have only done it on really jacked up feet. Stall rest mostly . One was an old wire cut found about 2 weeks after it happened and another was a horse that had jammed about an 1 in and was going to a sale but kept blowing out abcess after abcess. I think I posted some photos on here somewhere. Never had a problem wiith the foot dropping below the shoe.

I think sometimes if you float and use a bar shoe debris can still pack in between the shoe and hoof.

I've used Z bars in exceptional cases. The biggest draw back is that by using that kind of shoe you force a horse to stand on a "table with only three legs". This will in the end jeopardize soundness because the collateral ligaments for one will get strained.

I like the G bar but found the a false bar (or a rigid pad) with hoofpack is easier and faster and has less risk of messing up the correct fit.

My principle complaint with a z bar shoe is that the compromised area which one is presumably trying to unload is also left unprotected. In any deformable footing, such as a stall or an arena, the area without the shoe is subject to additional force. I object to reverse shoes on laminitis cases for the same reason.

There are ways around this. Adding a full hospital plate and packing with a soft material in conjunction with a z bar gives protection and lessened force to a region of the foot.

This package makes much more sense to me.

You make some very valid points, Michael, but I'm still stuck with the "table standing on three legs" condition that Ron spoke of as well as Pat. If I am working on a lame horse, I don't want to do anything that is going to possibly cause other lameness.

I think one reason it might work ok for me is my environment. And I have never applied it to a horse with exposed sensitive tissue.

There is of course a cure for the "three legged table" problem, and that's to add an extra leg for that table.

Meaning (as in all shoeing, especially therapeutic shoeing) the shoe should be fitted as if the resection or portion of the foot you are trying to unload for what ever reason, is still intact. But when a heel is missing the foot will be unstable on the shoe, loosing clinches or risking any glue bond.

The solution is to add (sole and/or frog) support elsewhere. The foot will have it's four "pillars" back, only one of them will not be at the heel but moved more axially, towards the frog. A heart bar might work, but a false bar may well work too. There are a lot of other options to help bring the load the missing heel (or heels) can't handle anymore, to a section the foot that can.
