SEVERE medial/lateral imbalance. 05 Nov 2010 01:19 #1

First off, my computer isn't letting me upload photos at the
moment so I'll try again tomorrow and probably just make an
album on my profile so you can see what I'm trying to
describe! So, what I'm dealing with is a three year old
quarter horse who lands exlusively on the lateral side of both
front feet when he walks. At the moment, the medial side
of each hoof is approximately 3/4" higher than the lateral.
Meaning that substantially more hoof had been removed on
the lateral side the last time this horse was trimmed. When
watching the horse walk, it appears as though the medial
side is approximately 3/4" LOWER than the lateral. This
horse has a conformational defect which appears to be an
outward rotation of the knee on both legs. He lives in 2-6 inches of mud
about seven months out of the year and is typically very lame.

I'm really not sure where to start with this guy. I've considered
bar shoes or frog support pads, but I'm not sure if they
would be of any benefit to the horse as it lives in so much mud.
This horse is kept barefoot and doesn't have a job
(pasture pet). When I first saw him 8 weeks ago, he almost
couldn't walk and my original plan was to at least get him landing
flat on his fronts. However, with what appears to be about
another inch of medial growth for this to happen I wonder
if having what appears to be an "imbalance" of 1 3/4"+
would begin to harm this animal. Like a said, he's not an
athlete, he just hangs out and eats all day, so my goal is
just to get him walking smoothly.

Pictures will hopefully be up on my profile tomorrow 11/5/2010.

Thank you for any help

Is this your horse or a customers? Poor bugger sounds like he could use a bullet. Sorry to be so blunt, but if it's not your project to practice on, no one is going to want to spend money on a pasture ornament with issues and his quality of life sounds cr@p.

This horse isn't mine and he really isn't even a regular client's.
He belongs to a guy who lives up the road from me and just
asked if I could take a look at him a while back. He is
walking a little better since I first saw him but is far from
anything which even loosley resembles sound. Puting this horse
down might actually be doing him a favor.

I'm always very reluctant putting horses down, but I don't particularly like fighting lost battles either. So -not having seen any pictures- the owner might want to consider putting this one down and picking up another rescue with less trouble?

Tell your neighbor that the horse is living with chronic discomfort and that the owner must make changes before you or anyone else can help. Suggest he either move the horse or address the paddock conditions and any other husbandry issues that might exist. Tell him you'd be more than happy to provide service to the horse IF the owner will commit to the expense and regular service required to give you any chance of success.

Couch the whole conversation in the context of "This is the kind of case that gets farriers in trouble. We try to help but a lack of commitment by owners leaves us looking responsible for the problems." If the horse it too far gone to help, recommend a vet and let them talk to the owner about any determination of euthanizing the horse.

If an owner shows no interest in doing what's right, walk away. If you don't, you can bet dollars to donuts that eventually the story will suggest that the horses problems are somehow your fault.

Cheers,
Mark

have you tried tapeing plastic wedges on him? you may get him landing more evenly however getting him to land flat is probably out of the question.
