I'm not really covinced either way after reading through this thread, but if you watch a pulling horse you can actually see them dig and pull with there front legs. So why wouldn't a race horse do the same?

Sure enough somebody is going to point out that Clayton hasn't shod enough horses . . .

Any horse or mule pulling a load uses it's fronts to establish forward motion.

So why wouldn't a race horse do the same?

Any horse uses its fronts to establish forward motion; however, AFTER forward motion is established at a gallop, the radius, carpus and third metacarpal are aligned throughout the support phases of motion and the only possible function of the front end is support. Put another way, a race horse is a four-wheel drive model away from the gates, but it becomes a two-wheel drive model at speed.

I think the confusion arises from the dichotomy. :)

So you believe the front limbs are just a crutch? Although even a crutch pushes you forward.

So you believe the front limbs are just a crutch?

After forward motion has been established at a gallop, there is no mechanism by which the front end can contribute to forward motion while the radius, carpus and third metacarpal are aligned during the support phases of motion; thus, the crutch analogy is apt, but only after forward motion has been established.

Although even a crutch pushes you forward.

Obviously, you ain't spent much time on a pair of crutches. You can use them to pull yourself forward when you're getting started, but after you get to rolling and inertia becomes a factor, their ONLY function is support.

Doubts? Give it a try.:)

Because a race horse isn't pulling a load and the pulling horse is not galloping so there is never a time when the radius, carpals and third metacarpal are aligned and that limb is the only one on the ground and acting as support. Simple n'est ce pas? :)
