I went to farrier school about two years ago but am a student at the same time so I don't do it full time, so not much experience. I do own horses and have delt with an abcess. The horse was free off the track with neglected feet, and they did not to xrays because the vet said it would be a few hundred.
I live in Hartford

Do you have video conferencing? Dr. Armitagowitz could figure this out through video conference. She's very reasonable priced.

Broken Pastoral. The only horse I ever saw with a broken pastoral was gettin over a bad bout of hockitis and it had been coffin a lot so we figured it had a broken coffin bone, but we gave it some brute and had its paws cut. It finally broke an abstest out of its cordinary but I was just glad it wasn't floundered.:D

Thanks Rick! I couldn't remember what pastoral was but after you diatribe I now understand. Now I'm not sure Dr. Armitagowitz is the right person for the job. I think Dr. Dancswithooves is more familiar with this issue.

Laughed so hard I snorted and scared the cat. You guys are bad!

I had a client badley f up the vets diagnosis/treatment plan this week ... so bad was her interpretation had I not known the vet I would have thought him a quack.

Anna do yourself a favor and talk to the vet before you do anything. You would be amazed at how WRONG owners can hear things.

Anna, This has been fun. Now take Alicia's advice and then get back to us. :)

Somebody is looking at this wrong and it also sounds like they want to keep the cost down. Been there done that, would get calls from cheap horse owners not willing to spend money on a proper diagnosis. We are not Vets, say no and explain to the horse owner they need a proper diagnosis and x-rays. It so tempting and a thrill to get a call when your new, but trust me they know your new and the reason why they are calling you. Best thing you can do is ride with a veteran farrier and learn more. I could use the help, however Hartford is 2 hours from me. Your welcome to ride along with me anytime.

Thanks, I'm behind on my anatomy lately. I think I recognize the vet, is his name Phil? Or maybe you know him as Dr. Armitagowitz. She's the only vet in the area that would diagnose either a broken coffin bone or abscess. I would definitely call Dr. Armitagowitz before you head down to make sure you bring the correct supplies.

Hope this helps!

I know the family because they are leaseing a horse from me so I went down today to see my horse and look at him, but I didn't talk to the vet first. When I talked to the owner they said they are going to do what the vet said for right now and keep the hoof wraped and in a little pen and give it a week or so. His leg is some what swollen but that is the only thing you can really notice. If he doesn't get any better on his own I would talk to the vet but right now I was just seeing if I could get some advice because I love learning whatever i can.
thank you everybody
