This is a rad send to me from one of my trimming clients. Veterinary advise from Massey University was to shoe with a 3 degree wedge pad to help "open the joint".

Thoughts?

I like the 3 degree aluminum wedge barshoe or the 3 degree aluminum elite shoe from victory.

if you have to use a raceplate; the 3 degree queens aluminum plate by Victory; although made in a hind shoe; can be reshaped to a front shoe, only if the walls are so thin and have to use a race nails in the hoof.

pads have a tendency to crush the heels over time; but I find the aluminums don't.

hope this helps;

I like your University, hell, even Nick Young could be a vet. It's the "P2" joint.:rolleyes::p

Linda,
If you raise the angle of the hoof, doesn't the pastern angle usually drop? Would lowering the angle of the pastern be a good idea for this horse, or might that place more force on the spur?

Thanks Linda,

I like that idea, but it's a part Clydey, so I don't think they come big enough for him :(

Jaye,

PI as in proximal interphalangeal joint, but Massey is well dodgy. Any ideas bro?

Was thinking the same thing when I saw the rad. However, if the pastern drops, that might indeed open the front of the joint a bit, though considering the location of the spur, I'm not sure it would do much good. I think that I'd want to limit the range of articulation and I'd start by trying to speed up and shorten, breakover. But, I'm not a veterinarian, don't play one on TV and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night.......

I am not sure that lowering the pastern angle would either open up the joint or reduce the range of motion. I would think the opposite would be true.

I am not sure about moving the breakover point caudally, but raising the angle would slow the breakover point down.

Have had good luck with putty in back 1/3 and flat pad or a heartbar depending upon job/disipline; yep a heart bar with good BO~~that's not body odor:p

I was strickly going by what he asked; and what the vet wanted; not agree or disagree on the shoeing and interfere with the vet/farrier relationship.

Victory elite goes up to a #3 - 3 degree shoe;

KB-4 Wedge eggbar aluminum, but in a 2 degree only, although; you can use a degree oval pad if needed; or what the horse can handle; or the vet and you agree upon.

or you can use the advice of Jaye and go with a heartbar shoe.' linda

Thanks Folks,

Have not had contact with the vet yet, but will contact him on Monday and discuss the concerns and alternatives raised.

In the end, to cover my own @ss I'll go with the vets suggestions, but see if I can make him think a bit harder with your suggestions.

Cheers
