a very bad toed in mare that i came across, i'm kinda lost here on what to do to make this better. she doesn't look very comfortable when she moves and she can't really run more than a couple steps. what would you guys try? thanks

these pics are of the left front, the right front is in pretty much the same condition.

Gday Digger
Mate all Id do at this stage is keep it simple
trim the hoof to tidy shape n level and fit a nice shoe with nice width in web so you got room to work with the wry side of hoof
slipper the branch to encourage the hoof to follow the steel don't nail back past widest part of foot on that branch
don't chase the wry side in with your shoe
heavily bevel the branch as well , you should be showing a fair bit of steel up that side you could build some break over into the shoe if you like
she doesn't look all that bad in the photo
the ground conditions look hard n dry and the horse looks longish i think shell come up trumps might not ever be perfect but you,ll be able to make a significant difference to her olson yeah

yeah mate
if you didn't feel you had enough toe to put a set toe on the hoof you could hammer it into the toe or slightly square the toe or both of the shoe

shoe the limb balance it up no need to get to flash with this one ;)

You have a boatload of retained sole there. Are you familiar with the process to peel it out?

Red offered some great advise here! As to the retained sole you touch a subject that can be grounds for heated debate. In my experience horses with sole like that end up real nice without to much cutting and peeling. And you may want to think about what is more important in this case helping the horse cope with its limb deviation or getting out a nice and crisp sole, risking overdoing it, taking away protection where its needed especially on the lateral side?

On the sole my advise would be buy the no doubt great knives Red talked to you about and use them carefully. You'll get you chance to turn this sole into a textbook sole once you have dealt with the bigger problems first.

I went back today and saw the horse, the owner just wanted me to look at it and tell him what i thought. the mare looks worse but seems pretty sound, she is difinitely more comfortable, however her front feet have nasty flares on the medial side of the foot and it's starting to roll over onto the flare.
I tried to explain the urgency on doin something with this mares feet and we talked about prices, he seems pretty reluctant to get this mare some help.
I forgot my camera or i'd have pics sorry

I have an older horse who I adopted from a client about 5 years ago. I did his farrier work for about 3 or 4 years before that as well. What I discovered the hard way with him is that he doesn't want to be "balanced". If I trim him anywhere near balanced, he's dead lame. I have to leave him with feet uglier than that mares in order for him to walk/trot/canter as it is his way of working around the arthritis in his knees. I'd recommend approaching the "balancing" of her feet slowly, so you get feedback from the horse if you are going in the wrong direction before you make her very sore. Normally I'm all for taking toes back and fixing what needs fixing and I don't take a slow approach but on this type of foot, I now do.

I didn't see it if you mentioned it already: How old is this mare?

Notice what you said: reluctant to get mare help; prices!!
but not too pricey to pay for a stud fee and get his mare bred and pass this along to the next generation???

think about it, linda muggleworth
