How would you all handle this case?

Get the hack saw out don't get to carried away at first, take off what hoof you can with out bleeding the poor bugger, Then don't worry to much about getting stuck in to the owner even if it means bleeding that bugger up.

Shoot that ain't much foot. Jan Young showed us pics and radiographs of one that had gone full circle and was starting on its second go round. She called it "360 degree rotation"

How old is this critter?

He-LL, your'e not far from Jim Poor's shop, If i had a question, on that one, i would call him up. I like to take advantage of the guys that , have more experience, I doubt , that he would turn you away.

I don't believe there is all that much foot to remove. It looks like a foal to me. I had one like this and I removed heel to bring the base of support back and rockered the toe as much as I could to bring the breakover back. The owner and I discussed heel extensions (tongue depressor would have worked, glued on)but we had such good response to the trimming that we just stayed with that. The foal was on a three week schedule at first. Any longer and the heels would grow forward and curl under and the foal would be back on the bulbs of his heels again with his toe flipped up. All told I believe it took about a year before the little guy would stay balanced enough that we could go out to a normal interval between trims, without him flipping those toes up. He's about a 5yo now and you'd never know anything had been wrong with him. Carol Newton

I got called in on some mini's like this and had radiographs to look at the whole deal....there is not a heck of alot foot. Within the year they were up under the feet and no one would have known the better.

Get hold of some glue on cuffs from Dalric (dallmer/Redden)
They really do work ,and the as quick as possible...
trim the heels back first ,use vettec super fast ,remove the fur in the cuff before glueing with a quick flame..tape the coranary band over so no glue get on that area ...a lttle frog support is good ,also..

This foal is 4weeks old, I don't know witch route I'll take it all depends on the owner. They don't realize the severity of this case.

Heck I have duct taped wood wedges on these little guys until the tendons strengthen.

I have seen a number of foals with this run down condition, seems like they give them some kind of calcium supplement. I disremember the details but your Vet should know, this is pretty common Sometimes they are born like this and the tendons tighten up in a few days when they start recieving enough milk.

I have used a number of different kinds glue on devices and in the ones I worked on they didn't seem to make a whole lot of difference.

As for the poker leg, I think Minis are supposed to have at least one.

Even the smallest Dalric would have been too wide for my little one. In this particular case, just the trim worked wonders, right from the start. So maybe trim and see what you have. If the toes still pops up, try the wedge or a tongue depressor extension or a Dalric if the foot is big enough. I believe the dalric will need to be "reset" fairly often to prevent constriction of hoof growth on the foal. Carol Newton
