are you talking tight in width or tight in lenth

If a plumbers line is droped from the bulbs of the heel ,then heel length "approx"
The half of that distance....is what we go for here
...and from the toe to the widest part of the hoof with the wall and back from there in line with the coranary band...or enough space for a fly to walk round the edge of the shoe:rolleyes:
This is the answer to what I go off to work with in my head for each horse...But in truth I would say it depends on the animal,the field it lives in and the area the clients are riding ..

Heel fit and length also depends on how one trims the heels.

Where my trimmed heels end, generally the heels of my shoe will end.

I remember Bob Marchal came to Tassie and said he fitted a lot of his horses in penciled heels tight as to a well trimed and ballenced hoof
Too close for many of my horses as you cant get to many owners to do less than 6 week intervals
Bob said 4 weeks or he wont work for them

Sorry about the shadows, but I first saw it when the guy had just finished this job three weeks earlier, heels were totally flush with the branches of the shoe. One heel was fully 15mm short with the others 5-10mm, all had collapsed over the outside of the shoe at this stage.

Smitty, here is some pics on how I usually fit.

You can grind in heel checks or hammer them in and the foot will be able to be cleaned better.;)Covering up the sulcus or commersures as some call them isn't a good idea.

As a very general rule. I fit to the origin or widest part of the frog.
It is where the non-distorted buttress would be.

But of course "It depends".
