I got a message from a customer saying that her equine message therapist recomended removing the snow ball pads from the hind shoes of her horse because they were putting pressure on the hip. She also said that maybe the hooves could be trimmed differently to help. I would like to think i'm an open minded individual but I can not for the life of me figure how a snow ball pad can efect the hip .(some may say snow ball pads dont allow for frog support) I dont want to have discusion with my customer about this before I inquire about . I'm hoping my customer relayed the message wrong .
Help please , thank you

what type of pad? rim or bubble ? not that it should really matter. thats a new one to me, around here there are therapists running around after taking a 2 week course and scareing the **** out of gullable horse owners,.
maybe start by seeing how many years experience this therapist has.. good luck!

The farrier knows s/he’s not a vet / massage therapist / chiropractor or equine dentist.

Actually the bubble type of pads can cause sacroiliac issues. As the bubble compresses energy is stored especially if the pad is filled underneath with the pink stuff that looks like silly putty. When the bubble decompresses the energy is released and the hip (along with the rest of the leg) is thrust upward which can place great strain on the Psoas and Sacroiliac. This phenomenon is compounded if the horse is doing any jumping where although the "popper" pad can add height to the horses jump (most that I outfit this way gain 4-6 inches) the horse needs to be monitored for any thrust related injuries. I'd strongly recommend that the horse be switched to rim pads.

Hernando, If this were true, wouldn't all jumpers be in pads?. Lots are, but isn't it to give them more protection, and there fore confidence? I can see where tender footed horses might be encouraged to jump higher with (full) pads, but might your conclusion be a misinterpretation of what you're seeing?

Also, by your theory, wouldn't you be hurting these jumpers you are padding, and thus gaining the 4 to 6 inches in their jump?

I don't think it passes the "smiley face test".

I'm guessing the message therapist is wrong, assuming there is nothing weird about the way the bubble pads were applied. On the other hand I find the rim pads work better in keeping the foot snow free anyway, so it's probably not a big deal. There is a recent thread on here comparing bubble pads to rim pads - opinions vary.

Alicia, when you order the T-shirts, let me know, I want some too :D.

Rick Shepherd

The right way to handle this is to dismisses and remove the massage therapist from the situation. Here's how you do that:

  1. Refuse to work on the horse again without a veterinary consultation - you and the vet together in person, with the horse.
  2. Farriers work on/treat "diagnosed lameness."
  3. Only a licensed veterinarian can legally diagnose lameness.
  4. Farriers do not diagnose or accept diagnostic input from laypersons "practicing medicine without a license."
Legally and ethically this is how you are OBLIGATED to proceed.

If any one of you have followed mr. everypersonisahorsetoo, you might have noticed that his full name has changed from armando montoya to hernando alonso. Is he driving f1? so this popper pad jump accelerator might be a joke:confused:

Hernando;
You need to get out more and experience more horses and concoctions applied to the hoof.
Horse City, is that close to Santa's Land ?

To think it took a farrier from Finland to notice your switch.
(I feel funny being privy to your spoof, but it has been fun)

Mr. Perry,

Have you tried this technique? You should not dismiss it until you have. You can't use silicone under the pads it must be the 2 part impression material.

I think all too often we here on horseshoes.com are prone to dismiss a technique that we have not personally tried.
