One year ago, this horse was in this way.

The owners put the horse in very dry box and put metronidazol, but the horse is sore. Saturday, the hoof has tons of the horn in the sole and hoof wall. I trim. The hoof has two holes. In medial hole, the bottom is dry and hard. do not look problem. The lateral hole is dry,but it's soft and very sensitive.

The hoof wall in the quarter is separated. I debrided until from the tissue looks sane and good.I think that is canker not very agressive. What do you think?

Gabino,

My [limited] experience with canker has been that the frog is always involved. While the canker may spread to other areas, I have never seen it involve other structures but not the frog.

So, perhaps it is not canker with which you are dealing. Looking at the photos, the first thing that came to mind was White Line Disease which may have been coupled with heel abscesses in the beginning. This would account for the area of sole at the bars/heels that appears to be involved.

Its hard to tell from the photo, but in the photo from a year ago, did the tissue in the resected area of the heels, particularly that tissue on the left side in the photo, have the look of a head of cauliflower and bleed really easily even if it was barely touched?

In the last photo of the trimmed hoof, it appears to me that the foot has become quite narrow and that the white line shows separation/stretching from just about the toe back to where the sole has been resected(left side of photo). On the right side of the hoof there is an area of discoloration of the sole that may indicate that the sole has or has had an abscess under it that vented at the heel .

Have any radiographs been taken?

Interesting case and I hope you will continue to post about its progress.

Rick,I'm a bit confused with this case. I know this horse the Saturday past. If the owner don't tell me nothig, I assure that is WLD or cronic infection in the bulbs and heels. The heels are contracted, the conective tissue is teared , the frog sulcus is very deep and the heels are very highs. The horse has pain on posterior zone of the hoof and walks on with the hoof pinces.

But the owner tell me,the horse, one year ago, had heads of cauliflowers, their frog runs off and suppurates a foul-smelling material. One cow's vet not specialist in horses, diagnoses canker and ordered metronidazol and dry box. During one year the owners put metronidazol every day.

When I resect the hoof wall, don't look one WLD normal. The most of the WLD are cavity beetwen the wall and the laminar interfaz. Here do not these separation. Besides, the toe is very sensitive.

There isn't rads or vet.For cover the two possibilities, I recommended, before, clean and rub with my "Clean frog FarrierGabino" (Formaldehyde 40 %) and after, put metronidazol. Within two weeks, the owners will send me more pics. I posted them. I'm very interesting in this case.

Gabino, this is an odd one. I am puzzled about it, and curious as well. I don't think WLD. Description given by owner definitely sounds like canker. The periople/ coronet appears to have been affected to a milder extent. The only thing I can think of is, you said the heels had a tendency to get very long (possibly neglected as well? maybe) If the level of farrier care prior to your involvement was sub par, could the hoof have been shod with too short a shoe, and left on for too long allowing superating corns to develop, giving the canker an entrance into exposed tissue in these areas??? You mentioned a cow vet was involved. But the horse was not sensitive in the heel area, just in the toe???? Any possible chance that the horse was nerved? Have you spoken with the vet? I really have no clue, just a hypothesis.

Hi Gabino
I would say canker that has penetrated really deep. It has been known to go down even into the Deep Flexor. I had one in the past that kept coming back very much like this one. Treated it, outside looked great and every now and then came back just like what you are showing. We are now mixing Iodine crystals with Metronidazol.
This is the link if it helps as it is the best result we have had to date. The problem with your case is that it is not all exposed and I think it needs to be to heal properly.
Good luck
