TOPIC: Flare in heel????

Flare in heel???? 02 Jan 2010 14:01 #1

This is a dessage horse 5 years old, shows that this detachment formed in the heel flare, I do not know how this happens, or how to avoid this problem. You can see the problem in the photos below, the left hoof, which is the medial side. How to avoid? Why so?

By the pics, the horse has long toe, low heels. Toes need to be pulled back, trim the heels down until you get good heel (if possible), then you may have to use some wedges to bring back to proper angle. Getting good hoof balance and proper time between shoeing periods will take care of much of your problem.

Myron Maclane pads or other solutions to transfer weight off of the affected heel quarter will help. Cleaning out the detached cavity and packing with copper sulfate and keratex hoof putty or similar medicated packing may help also. Resecting that quarter is also possible but perhaps a bit of overkill. Simple is often better.

Hi Jay !
I understand Jay,I removed the wall detached but not yet used a frog support. I will do in the next shoeing .
Thanks very much!
Kako;)

I'm not sure what you mean by "Flare in the heel", but I think that looks like an old abcess that started under the bar and vented out at the heel bulb.

A cycle or two should have it taken care of if it's just what it looks like from here. Keep his heels short and add a wedge with some frog support if needed.

Hi Ricardo
I have re-attached your pictures and my opinion would be that you have some disrupted growth or scarring (arrows) that is causing a weakness in the 2 areas indicated. As you can see there is a build up of debris at the toe and I'm sure in the affected heel before cleaning it out. This debris will work these areas bigger and bigger and could be the cause of the flare. If you were to really clean these out and package them with a rebuild material that bonds to the hoof so nothing can get under it and becomes weight bearing combined with lifting your PA and less leverage you will see amazing results in the next shoeing cycles.

kako
it looks to me as though there is a lot of heel to bring down there, combined with backing up the toe i think your problem has a good chance of being solved

Hi Chris

I agree with you, is a balance problem, it has underrun heel, I know, but I never saw this form flare. He has long toe and low heel, but, I repeat never seen a flare of this size.

The flare is there because the heels are so long and under run they are literally pushing the wall out at the quarters. The hoof wall detachments , including the toe flare, are driven by the long heels.
Get rid of all that heel and dress the flares off, (including the toe flare) and keep it that way. Then they should not come back and your foot capsule will come back together nicely as it grown in. Here is where the quarters go when the heels get forward :
