The problem with the plastics, are not on problem feet that are in a state of rest. Ron is "usually" shoeing athletes that must perform. You can't nail plastics on horses that work in wheat fields doctoring cattle ,nor on ahorse that performs on grass unless you want the animal and rider to take a bad fall. Nor would one nail them on any horse that actually would torque the ground ie, Cutters, cowhorses, reiners, ropers, or canchasers. Nail them on the pasture pets that need help thats all. They are a helpful tool on horses that need them , thats all nothing more or less.

Hey Gary:

I have horses who are doing work in fields, endurance, dressage (easy surfaces) trail riding on very unforgiving terrain, and they are doing fine.

I wouldn't put them on any horses jumping or torquing as you are right, no clips, they wouldn't stay on.

I don't feel comfortable discussing the Epona's too much. ;)

So thanks Gary, I'm off to bed.

Kim,
Only termed it "lay" based on Karen's description. Shoe can make up for some inadequacies of the applicator. I don't have a problem w/ any style/protocol as long as it's used where appropriate. I just get tired of "rock throwing". ******, I'm not above nailing/glueing up a set of "muck-a-lucks.

What kind of work in fields? Walking or lopeing (canter) , dressage???They can do barefooted, trail riding Ie walking??
I am talking about work, tying on to a bull or momma cow or calf, holding and controlling a heifer, sliding stops and spins, running a clover leaf pattern and running in the 15's on a PRCA pattern. Even the Dallas Police Force dropped the plastics due to horses slipping on grass. Performance horses are what I refer too.:)

Alright here is what Dan and I got done today. Rocker bar shoes with 1 degree bar wedge and impression material. Dan is the shoe building god, he made the LH at home of a template I made and looking at a couple pics on the computer. Pulled it out of the truck punched some nail holes, clipped and nailed it on. Perfect fit, Roll perfectly matched to COA as measured off rads by vet.

Made RH shoe at my house and got it put on. Horse moved of very stiff and sore with reluctance to trot before shoes. After shoeing moved off a lot better, less soreness, some spring in his hocks and wanting to trot. Standing on the mats he was standing with his legs farther back than normal to were they should be, before he would always stand with them way up under himself.

Dan's shoe making and my trimming nailing and finishing. Nailing could have been a little better especially the heel nails, but this horses walls are about the thickness of two 5 slim nails.

Thank you Dan couldn't have done it with out ya.

Great work guys. I like to see a really simple and effective protocol work out. I like the position of the roll to. Looks well positioned at the COA. Next time maybe try a higher wedge. It looks like this foot can handle some more.

Two things I said several times before and which I'd like to repeat. First, shaping a regular shoe in a banana curve is a WHOLE lot easier than forging it the way you guys did. I agree the forging excercise can be fun, but we're in this for the money too. Second, try and have the roll extend all over the ground surface of your shoe. Try and forge more of a roll and less of an acute bump in the shoe.

Ron, I understand the differance in the two styles of nanners but the trip you put on the foot, can you post some good photos of it before the shoe and pad are applied? I am trying to wrap my little brain around the fit? Do you just rasp to fit or hotfit with a steel shoe?? Thanks.

Ronald Aalders

Ron I actually made a banana and two nailed it on with a 3 degree wedge pad, let him stand around in it for awhile and then moved him a little. He wasn't moving the way he is in this setup with the banana. He was landing either a little toe first or right on the center of the roll, he wasn't using the back of his foot at all with the banana. I felt that this could possibly lead to other complications, so decided to try the rocker bar, Dan suggested the 1 deg. pad, I feel any more wedge would have been to much.

At the moment, standing at rest his legs are properly lined up to where they should be and he has the heel of the shoe maybe an 1/8 to 1/4 inch off the ground. Measuring the rad overlay on his foot he looks to be about 3-4 degrees in the +, If I get a day off I may get some more rads for curiosity.
I'll try to get a pic of the banana.

Thanks Justin Decker
