I looked at the Extra's but I am going with EZ's because they come with clips....I know about 20 people just moaned, but after whacking myself in the face this morning with my clipping hammer while attempting to practice pulling clips, I've decided the ability to pull clips is over-rated . I am going to be the only farrier in history who won't be able to pass certification because I can't pull clips!!! *%&*!@ things..... LOL

Twenty may have moaned but one just lost.
You wacked yourself because you were "attempting to practice pulling clips" instead of determining to pull clips.
Your disision as to the rating of the ability to pull clips is not based on experiance of pulling clips sucsessfuly, so it is invalid.
You will in no way be the only shoer (note the term Farrier not used) in history unable to pass due the lack of ability to pull clips. You will join the ranks of the majority of iron hangers who just get by.
Now put some ice on the hammer wack, think about what you did wrong, what you need to do right, and go at it tomorow.
In our next episode we will go into why only woosses use extra e-zs and how an almost perfect fit doesn't fit.

LOL - I was sort of kidding! Clips are my worst enemy, but I'll figure them out! So I still want to know why only wusses use Xtra-EZs.......

I always get the X-tra and X-tra EZ's confused. IMO, there both nice shoes.

Kinda off track, but on extra EZ"s I always found the nailholes to "woller" out. I try to get at least one reset out of my shoes, sometimes I couldn't because the nail hole had gotten so big. I used clips and capewells (slim 5). Has anyone else had this problem? Was it my choice in nails? Just wondering....

EZ's come in front and hind patterns
Xtras are the generic compromise non-pattern shoe.

I knew you would not let a little hammered up face action turn you away from being the best.
The reason I hate the idea of preshaped shoes is that they lull us in to a "close enough" complacency. I feel guilty enough useing keg shoes anyway, but at least I straighten out the medial and run the lat a bit longer, open and roll the toe, check rhe heels all myself while thinking this shoe for that foot.
So, you may ask, why don't I make all my shoes from flat stock? I'm starting. I ran out of #3 so Im making those myself henceforth.
A trick I learned while welding that applys to clip making, is to not try to "make" the clip do what I want, but to "watch" it do what I want.

Is it just me, or are the e-z front's shaped better for a hind than a front? I quit using the e-z's last year for that reason, IMO the plain X-tra is a closer fit front than the "patterned" e-z front.

For me, the answer is no, the Xtra is not a close front fit. I don't have many with that kind of pointy toe and relatively straight toe quarters.

Joey,
They are shaped for an imaginary horse that dosen't exist. They are close to fitting, and when something is close to fitting it's another way of saying "it dosen't fit".

My mistake...

I just went out to look, and it appears I have my shoes mixed up. (and screwed up my last stocking order)

Cest la vie.

I was going to ask the same thing.

Josh, I don't like to Custom Fits as much as I used to. I tried Kerchaerts and switched over about a year ago, but I used some X-tra EZs and now I like them quite a bit. I don't know, I guess I'll make my way through all the brands and see what happens!!

Why dont you give Ray a call? I use a lot of his shoes, they are great. Look in your latest snefa news letter his number and some good info.

I like the E-Zs because I can nail them on right out of the box 'cuz they're already fitted. From there, I fit the foot, which is a piece of cake with a sharp rasp. After that, the only thing left to do is knock on the door and collect my $35.

If I don't use the E-Zs, I have to use my anvil and open or close the heels to get a good fit. What a waste of time & effort.

Cordell,
you are joking i hope

Brian,
I would bet on conditions were the horse stays, muck and pee will rot nail holes, and a lose nail will do it too. The nails toward the heels are the first to go.
St. croix Extras are my bread and butter shoe and I havent noticed any problems.
