Tom,

I thought those things sticking off the back of my anvil were for opening dark beer bottle tops. Good tipping a few with you at the Hyatt.

Cheers,

Business 101: It's not how much a tool costs that matters; it's how much money you can make with that tool and for how long. Also, don't forget about depreciation, ladies and gentlemen.

Smitty,
I know what you're saying my friend you're preaching to the choir here.

I like to do things as I always have though. For me pesonally I get much more personal satisfaction from my work that way.

Smitty you're a coward! I know it's not Mustad, it looks too good! Amazing what 2 tumblers of Ardberg does to a man!

And probably Thomas here is the only one who knows what Ardbeg's is...... Sure beats Jameson's! Sorry Smitty :D

Name that fuller for two hundred please, Alex!

Thats my guess.

I have used my journeyman for eight 9 years... I love it. I also have a 156 lbs Hay Budden that I used in my trailer. You will like the JHM.

Oh that my forging advice was accepted as readily as the cold ales on the warm afternoon after the hard work, as I recall.

I have recently bought the same tool. Maybe a foolish question but just wanted to know what you are doing to secure the head on the handle. tommy

Most guys are using a small section of inner tube stretched over the end while putting the creaser on.... seems to work pretty good.

That was my guess, and choice, too.
When you call there and get Jim or Kathleen on the phone, I like to ask if this is the Babes with Guns web site.

Just got one myself from Jim and Kathleen at the convention. They make great tools.
Had to go "field expediant" at Ricks clinic this weekend...didn't have ay inner tube with me, needed the creaser, and secured it with a bent over nail driven down the back of the handle. *note to self- set up your gear BEFORE you put it on the truck.
Oh, and don't put the tool on the handle backwards (3x) in front of a group of other farriers. :)

I bought a bunch of other tools while I was down there. Most of them I know how to use except one. I've got a Bloom Creaser but I've never seen one used before. I know this is a ****** question, but does a guy need a right handed and a left handed creaser or are they to be used either right or left handed and if so, how should the head set on the handle for a right handed person? I have used or seen someone else use the other tools while I was working in Texas. Now I just have to re-familiarize myself with them all. I am trying to plan a few days with some of the local farriers to get some forging instruction and to get help with my shoe board.

Not a ****** question at all. The answer is, "It Depends". :)

It depends on the way you fuller your shoe. For example, Mike's creaser was set up for a right handed farrier like me, who creases in a 'cross-over' style--the right branch of the shoe is creased then the shoe is rotated and the un-fullered branch which is now on right side, is fullered. I fuller left branch, rotate the shoe, fuller left branch. As Mike noted, it took four tries before he was able to re-orient the fuller so it could work for me. It was getting rather dark at that time, so we'll chalk it up to night blindness as Mike is not old enough to suffer from "All Timer's Disease" or even "Some" or "Most Timer's Disease" :D

And, much to my relief, I did not add my hammer signature to the face of his anvil.

One last idea. I use high temperature engine gasket compound instead of a piece of innertube. Just squeeze a bit onto the handle, squeeze some more into the hole in the fuller, shove the fuller down onto the handle, wipe off the excess and let it set up for 24 hours. Because I do suffer from , at a minimum, "Sometimers disease", I used red gasket goop for my right handed creaser and Blue gasket goop for my left handed creaser(red/right--I need these word association games to help me get through the day :) ).

Red Port wine should be Left alone. Starbord is green so you have things muddled well. Try parking the truck in the opposite driection, with the anvil the other way.
