Brian,
the more entertaing question is how do i keep myself "dressed to the right" while wearing my lucky boxers(did I mention wear ONLY your boxers!) while holding my tongs, pulling my ear and swinging a hammer! Some times I get confused and put my ear to the right and tug on something else! :o

I still struggle with concave welds, but switched to using my crosspein. It is far lighter than my sledge of a rounding hammer ( I think 2 1/2 lbs maybe a bit less) and have had far better results. If you are using a 54 oz 35 inch Hack Wilson club, you are not going to be able to sacrifice the runner to third...

Nice... The weld looks clean. Shape is subjective (and can be changed)
What stock size is that? 3/8x1?

I'm noticing that the "scarfs" shown in this thread are more blunt that I was taught to do.... Was I mis-informed or are there different thoeries on the scarf size and shape?

That looks about right to me. If you thin them too much they cool faster when you bring it out.

Ahh... Maybe this is part of the problem too. I've been drawing out my scarf to almost paper thin at the end and my lap (total area) is probobly double or more than what is shown here. Another piece to my puzzle..... Thanks!

try doing it without scarfing it. There's more metal too hit. The thinner the scarf the more exacting you have to be. If your scarf is drawn out to 64ths of an inch. That means you have 64ths of an inch to forge before your stock is too thin. Your weld and scarfs should be stuck and blended in before you start working the frog plat. And I never really work my frog plate. As I forge my bar straight around the horn the frog plate comes. If that makes sense. Don't over think it. When you bring the metal out. its sticky. Try swinging your hammer so it doesn't bounce back at you.

My forge welding was really bad until I got some tips from this site:
1. clean metal between two pieces being welded
2. heats are proper - both pieces are same color
3. to get the hotest heat, place work to the side of the blue flame. Find your hotspot and use it.
4. light taps working form end of scarf to thicker part.
5. worry about one side at a time.
6. don't over burn the flux

These are what I have followed and my welds improved greatly. All tips from others here on the site, not mine.

I have found that using a one pound hammer helped me in making my welds. I found that if I wait on the heat most of my welds are good.

Find someone who is sucessfull in making the welds and spend some time with them and everytime you light your forge to practice building shoes end the session with a weld.

I had to learn one way, master it, and then learn to tweak it.

Brian, maybe you should kick in a couple of bucks towards the liner in Bob's gasser. No matter how little you use; flux loves to eat the refractory.

Hey,.... Whatever it takes. I try to do as litte welding in the gasser as possible. I use the coal forge for that. Anyway, I'm off to Bob's...

Had a great day with Bob and his guys.... Thanks much to Eric, Sam, Tom and Gary for putting up with me. Got my ego busted up pretty good and realized the "value" of having good quality hot work tools. Learned some new tricks for everyday work and last night before I came home Bob helped me immensely with my forge welding. I've still got far to go, but at least I am on the right road now. (I was destined to crash and burn on the other one) wish I could have stayed longer, maybe some other time....
