For the shoe makers - Do you prefer a round or flat horned anvil? I recently used a round horned anvil and I liked it!!

I like a round horn.

Some people are like Slinky’s, pretty much useless but make you smile when you push them down the stairs.

If you ever went with a round horn, you would never go back to a flat horn anvil....

What do you guys consider the horn on a Future 3? Its not flat, but it doesnt seem to be truley round either.

I just got the anvil, its much rounder than my old NC bigface though. Whats the point of a flat horn?

Amy and I were discussing this last week. I really like a round horn a lot better since I heated my first shoe. My dads anvil has a great round horn on it, but the anvils edges are all rounded off, I cant even draw a clip. Its a shame.

Amy,

I agree with Dusty 100%.....I bought a Scott anvil a year or so ago and I love it......big round horn and a wide face with a tapered heel..very funtional

it's hard going back to the flat horn Calvary anvil that is now in my shop (at least until I can get a replacement)

we discussed these anvils a while back and you can find them on a search of this site......if you want pics of the Scott anvil I can send them to you

A round horn is preferred... No flat spots in a horseshoe. :)

Here are some pictures of the Bowerman Anvil.
The Scott Anvil is a copy of it.
High Country Horseshoe supply in Canada now owns the pattern and the anvil is available again.

Josh,

You can rebuild any steel anvil with a hard surface rod.

McKay makes a rod for a stick welder called Hardalloy118. It cools and hardens to the equivalant of the face of most anvils. (48 Rockwell C)

Preheat the anvil to about 600 degrees with a torch and start building up the deficient areas with the rod.
If you are building up large areas on the edge, in between beads use a old cross pein and forge the weld into the anvil.
Grind it back with a Large disc grinder.

I have rebuilt anvils that way for 25 years and never had a problem.

After planting this Haybudden in the flower garden a few years ago I have been trying to get it to go to seed; no luck yet- guess I'll takes Bob's advice and re-do it.

Hello Jaye,

I bought a 250 Lb. Haybudden from a guy who had it sitting on a stump at the end of his driveway for about 20 years.
It was in such bad shape, no one would steal it. The edges were rounder than the horn.

We rebuilt it and it is one of the nicest anvils in the shop. It took about 6 hrs. of welding. Well worth it!

Jaye,
That anvil looks exactly like my fathers, Nice chain, did you find yours at the bottom of the Hudson attached to a body as well?

Bob,
I will definitely take your advice on that. I'll order some of that rod up.

No one addressed the question I had about the Future 3 anvil's horn. Any thoughts?

No the anvil was a gift, used in the West Virginia coal mines- it was a customer's Great- Great Grand Fathers. The chain was a forging excercise, as the old Irishman said "Here's your F---king homework, bring me back some chain".
