Thanks Smitty, I usually cheat and use a clip starter, been awhile since I used my ball pien. Was out of practice. The clip starter works along the same idea as a bob punch. For AFA certification I think you have to use a ball pien. I recall reading somewhere that a clip starter is not allowed, not sure if a bob punch is allowed. When you say dome the top of the pien, do you mean make it more pointed? I had to repunch a couple of the nail holes before I nailed the shoes on, closed one of them right up. You will be happy to know I did not reshape the clips with a file or grinder. I used the grinder to take off sharp edges, safe, box and make it pretty.

What's next?

Rocky Irons, who used to shoe in Nova Scotia, always claimed he left holes in the clip base to drain off the water they walked in up there.

For efficiency in everyday work, I like a single tool - a cross pien for rim type shoes and a ball pien for flat shoes, but as Jason commented, a bob punch or clip starter will give more consistant clips- particularly if you don't do them regularly.

Nice work Phil.
To the best of my recollection, I dont believe the AFA used to care how you made clips as long as they came out good.

Ask somebody who is more up on it though because it may have changed.

The AFA dont specify how they are forged, you can even use a clip starter.

Good day.....Smitty 88........excellent idea....great tips.....I like the idea of drawing clips with ball pein hammer....is there a suggesting on how the hammer should be modified.....it is taken me a little time to master hammer control...hitting in the same spot...think I got a handle ( pardon the pun ) on this one.......

Rocky Irons was my instructor and mentor for many years , he participated in many farrier forging compititions AFA plus...one of the greatest horseshoe makers I ever met. Unfortuately due to an injury to his hand he had to retire from farriery and the last time I spoke with him he was living in the USA.

He was and still is a major influence to many farriers who went thru the now closed Atlantic Farrier School .....in the late 80's and early 90's.......he was like a magician at the coal forge..

thanks to the other farriers for their input.......now all I need is a camera...but for now I am taking plenty of notes.

just the kind off info I was looking for,

David

Thanks for the update on Rocky, I first met him at the AFA convention in Jackson, Miss in 1981 and admired him immensley. Due to the great distance between our homes, I only saw him at conventions and never saw him work, but we had many good discussions and I learned a lot from him.

So, Ive been busy the last two days and haven't been able to get to the computer that much.... Here are some "mods" that have actually been used and some others are part of my "pre" shoe board. I have been told that these shoe mods would not be accepted by AFA standards and that I shouldn't even try. But they are a starting point for me. (still green) The used shoes are from a mare with a fractured coffin bone. The four clip shoe was obviosly for stablization, and the "bar" shoe was to protect the fracture. I fabricated them both on site and when she was done with them, kept them as "wall hangers"

Smitty,
Interesting looking anvil you've got there. I don't believe I've seen one like it before. Is it a European make?

What exactly have they told you is not AFA acceptable. They all look like good mods to me. I really like the heart bar.

RE:Modifying Machine Shoes 08 Feb 2007 19:16 #29

My extended heel shoe.... "The extended portions of the heels are not crisp enough." My rocker toe shoe... "The rocker is not defined enough on the foot side of the shoe and is rocked a liitle too far back." My straight bar shoe... "The bar is not prefectly 90 deg to centerline of the shoe" I didn't even ask about the heart bar... I have a few others as well. My square toed shoe... " not defined enough at the corners." My wedge shoe... "Clips are too small." The list goes on. I guess its all about luck of the draw when you go to test. Some testers like... some testers don't....
