taught this topic might help the ones starting out and maybe
shed some light for those taking a test soon

some of you might show your mods on your daily routine
before and after pics would be good

maybe we could do a mod every 2 weeks
and try give these people a hand

just a taught

we could start with cliping non clip shoes

1 Bob Punch
2 Ball Pein
3 Cross Pein

anyone you want

Brian,
Good to see the young'ne in the game. I just started my sixth boy pulling shoes. His brothers are all good Farriers though they haven't all chosen to follow the trade, they did learn how to work and that if they can do this, they can do anything. My sons have had employers 'bidding' against each other to hire them. Though my boys arent all that big playing lineacker and catcher is no problem after shoeing QH hind ends.

smitty88,
1 Bob Punch
2 Ball Pein
3 Cross Pein
which do you think is the most efficient and use the most often for consistent well made clips. do you ever use a rounding hammer on the clip horn, thanks

Frank

Alot of different choices in pulling clips .... My "mentor" taught me to use a hand held punch and turning hammer, I got decent with it, but did not like the method. I started using a ballpien on my own and got pretty good results, but still was not happy with the finished product. I finally ended up making my own short punch and modifying a set of tongs to hold it. It is the method I like the most and I have hade several other tool heads to fit those tongs. (kinda like the holder tongs that Jim Kieth makes) I'll try to post some pics of them later. I guess what I am trying to say is that you should try as many metods as possible and find the one you like the most.... Gotta get. See ya!

A few years back I was at a Don Gustafson seminar at Amsterdam Farrier Supply. Don he was demonstrating how to draw clips using a ball pien hammer. He said he got this particular ball pien hammer at a yard sale for just $2 about 20 years ago. Just then he went to swing the hammer and the head broke off of the hammer. We all got a good laugh out of that. The folks from Amsterdam brought him a brand new clipping hammer from Flatland Forge so he could finish his demo. I never did find out if they let him keep the Flatland hammer or if he put another handle on his trusty $2 ball pien. :)

Here's the deal. I'm trying to keep it simple.

Brian,
I realy think the bob punch is the most consistent. I get a wider variance in results when I use my crosspein.

These are handmade shoes, but just showing the clips.
This is one I just did with a bob.

If you notice the second one, it has a hole in the clip. This is to let out any toe pressure that happens to build up

Yes i see that, a wonderful idea an air cooled aerobic zone to vent hot spots.

Here are some pics of the "tools" I use.... The "bits" or short bob punches and creaser are made of coil spring stock, the tongs are old "diamonds". I have drawn out one rein and scrolled it around a steel ring, the other rein is notched to catch the ring when the jaws are holding. One set of tongs is made for holding the bits to strike, the other is made to hold the stock while making the bits. The hand held bob punch is also coil spring stock and is forked to get consistant source hole spacing from the outside of the shoe. The pritchel is tool steel and is an "everyday driver". All of these tools have pros and cons I enjoy having a variety to choose from depending on the situation at hand.

Brian,
I don't know about you, but for me there is a good feeling about using tool I have made. Also you get to make them exactly how they work the best for you. Nice looking stuff.

On the foot

The coating on the foot looks milky it froze before it dried. Only 10 deg F this morning. Nice time to work in the forge.

Smitty thanks for the demo and instructions on useing a bob punch.

Just drew a couple of clips today to show. Not the best but they are functional and I have learned it is very satisfieing to make things and then put them on the horses. Used a Bloom clipping hammer to make these, but will now try the bob punch method and see if that works.
