Roy,

Nice tool & fuller stock!

Did you make your own swage ? What size square are you starting with ?

T&F is my next project...maybe you could start a thread with the basics for we neophytes....

Smitty,
I do not see what you mean about the wedge? Could you explain?
Thanks,
Jason

Jason, I got somebody else to do all the hard work. Making these by yourself is no fun at all.

The hind shoe was made from 10" of 5/8" Square.

I'm using one of Derek Gardner's blocks. I didn't know anybody around here that had one so I bought it. We've made four more from mine and I have another piece of stock that's been run through it that I'm supposed to send to VA so somebody else can make one.

If you want to come down and make one let me know. Or maby I'll come up for Rick's clinic and we'll make tool & fuller shoes. :D

Maby we could get Smitty or one of the Brits to do a thread on the basics. I'm still doing trial and error and there seems to be a lot of finesse things I just don't have sorted out yet.. I'll post the pictures if somebody else wants to take them and walk us through it. In the meantime I'll try and make one with a better wedge.

The tool I didn't buy is the guide fuller to go with it. I'm thinking I might need to get one because it's really hard fo me to get the fullering in consistently, especialy on the front shoes.

This one is 9" of 5/8" square.

:o one for the pile.

Who's the "we" khemosabe? I already told them I'm not into doing forging exercises. Now if you want to be the forgemeister , I'm perfectly content with that. :) Ever since I ruptured the tendon that controls my thumb movement, my accuracy and endurance has gone by the wayside and what little I could forge, has often become an effort in frustration. C'est la vie, c'est la guerre!

Ever wake up in the middle of the night with that "cartoon" light bulb over your head..... I did last night regarding what Smitty was trying to say about the "wedge".(I think) Can someone please verify? The wedge is the formation that can be visualised between the two points at the widest points of the foot and the center mark at the toe. In this case the center mark is "off center of the toe bend, making the wedge seem turned to the lateral portion of the shoe. Is this a correct interpretation? :o

rICK ' dON,T BE SUCH A BABY? rEMEMBER WHAT gEORGE SAID %wE ALLWAYS ELECT THE GUY WHO MAKES THE PRETIEST SHOE% :D

Smitty, Does anybody still use this stuff? It's fun to mess around with but it's alot of work, especialy compared to concave which is no work at all.

Brian, The "wedge" is the small four side tapered caulk on the inside branch not a graduation in the thickness of the shoe.

What you are refering to is what my teacher reffered to as the "V". That is the trick to fitting a foot- gettting the tow radius and quarter bends correct--If I heard "If it don't fit , check your V!" One more time, I was going to shove a pritchel in somebodies "V"... but I learned.(for the most part the rudiments of shoe fit! Did you know if you straighten a shoe on the heel of the anvil rocks drop from the sky and pelt you. Somehow he always knew when I was cheating! )
The wedge is the pyramid shaped traction device on the medial aspect of th shoe, and I am still uncertain what Smitty dislikes... but I have almost no experience forging any roadster like shoe.

I know what a wedge shoe is Roy.... I was tryin' to understand the "lie of the wedge " thing that jason was referring to. Jason, is the wedge turned around backwards?(or am I understanding wrong)....

sorry my computer went down
Jason and brian do you see the wedge on both shoes
Roys wedge is leaning out this can happen when your

wedge gets twisted and you cant get it back to the way
you had it

the more important is the safty factor been the inside

if you still dont understand i can make two wedges for ya if i
get time

Roy i would be greatfull if you would do a mod in the other thread

for the boys/gals

RE:Bar stock cutting 10 Feb 2007 15:22 #74

Explanation I got by an ole time logger, useing wedge and calks for traction the medial wedge is so the horse won't step on the opposite foot and damage it. I think what Smitty is saying about leaning the wedge in more is probably for the that purpose. Sometimes at pulling events I see calks on the medial and lateral branch and fit full front and hind. Wonder these horses don't step on the opposite foot with all that. The ole timer I know has drive in wedges and calks and the original tool and wooden tool box to remove and change the calks since he was 14 years old working in the woods. Neat stuff.

Roy excellent work, nice to see. Hope you come to the clinic in March, I am going and would like to meet up with you.
