Red,
Yea, I am going. First time for me to try one of these things, so I am entered in class I only. Will see how it goes.

One thing that helps me to make a better shoe is measure and pre-mark my shoe before I begin. This helps me to do a bette job.

Smitty - always appreciate advice. I'm far from perfect and any tips to help me will be appreciated. I got some good tips on welding which helped a lot.

One thing I found that helps is use the brush more while making the shoe - pull from the fire and hit it a couple three times with the brush to knock the slag off. Also clean your anvil top so your not pounding the slag into your shoe.

Amy forge the foot side of the shoe, aolong with what Mikel suggested.
A clean anvil surface and brush your shoe a few licks after you take it out of the forge.

To ad to that Amy dont over heat your iron
and also brush the shoe when it is starting to scale

at cherry red colour for best results

if you have a nice finish on your shoe you can
and you want a glass look finish

put your hand in the bucket of water put some water
on your anvil and work your shoe

you wil get a nice finish

I personally would rather have an effective shoe that fits and all the nailholes proper and on the bottom of the foot doing what it is supposed to do? After a few days on, it will shine better than any amount of wirebrushing you do. I shoe horses for a living, I play in the forge to make me better at shoeing not blacksmithing? JMO, Best, Gary

Thanks for all the "shining" tips! I am going to have to try the water on the anvil trick. I think part of my problem is that my forging is still a bit slow, so it does take me a few extra heats and the shoes do get a little crispy :)

Gary, when I make shoes to nail on, I don't give any attention to how shiny they are. I am trying to make shoe board quality shoes, so non-fried and shiny will probably help me out a bit :o

As anyone who has ever had to work hot iron in the rain will attest, you might get a bang or two as well. A bit of water on your anvil face can damn sure keep you awake. :)

I shod horses for Al Morgan's wife after he was too stove up to shoe anymore. It was wicked on both of us; Al was angry that he couldn't do the work himself, and I was saddened that he couldn't do it. We were both a little embarrassed by the situation, but he wasn't so taken back by it that he avoided opportunities to get a dig in on me at some point during the day. One day I brushed up a shoe after I'd hotfit it, and I hit it lightly with the file side of a hot rasp before taking it over to nail. Al shook his head in disgust and said, "It's a damned poor horse that can't polish his own shoes."

I am, obviuusly kidding. That is a beautiful peice of iron work, a huge amount of finnese went into that!
