Brian,
Don't worry about critisizm or ego, they are only skin deep. What matters is you are at the forge giving it a go. Try to evaluate your shoe and learn what works and what don't. You should see some of my clips, ugly. Anyway glad to see your work, keep it up.

Brian,
As long as it's better than the one before and the one after is better yet, then your on the way. looks like you could nail it on. When I practice, I make pairs then I can nail them on.
Keep going,

Brian why did you go that road instead of bumping the heels?

Smitty,
The main reason was that I didn't have any 5/16 stock on hand, but also, I had been thinking about trying it that way to reduce the number of heats.
With upsetting the heels, as you know, you can only work one end at a time. drawing out the middle was basicly a one or two heat process. Also my heel and quarter sections were easier to match. When I upset, I have a hard time keeping them the same. One more reason is that alot of times with upsetting you end up with too much or too little length when you get to turning your shoe. This allowed me to make my toe, turn my heels and then cut off the heels if I needed (without taking away from the height of my wedge) then make final adjustments from the heels into the quarters. This shoe worked out to be the right length for my pattern. (lucky guess on length) "I showed you mine now you show me yours...."

ps I've got some pics of the first shoes I ever made (about three or four years ago) I'll try to load them next time.

Interesting way and reasoning. Never thought of it that way, but you make a good case. I might give it a try sometime.

In addition to using a bar stock shear which seems to be popular with everybody, I also use a hand held circular saw with a metal cutting blade.

I have found this to be as good as an expensive chop saw which I have no room for and much cheaper too.

While we are on the subject of bar stock and forging could anyone give advice on a video that shows how to fashion a straight barshoe? I live in a rural area and the nearest farrier group is about 130 miles from me. Finding help is very difficult. Smitty, if you have a instructional video,I'd love to have it. Your work is Top Shelf!

Kindly
Mark

Mark,
There are a good number of videos available.

Two of them I can think of offhand are the Doug Butler and Bob Marshall tapes. Both excellent recommend them highly.

After finding good videos it is important to remember that forging is a participant sport. Time spent practicing cannot be overemphasized.

There is really no other way to develop proficiency than to just get out there and do it.
