Hi all,

The thing they all have in commen is that after you get on to shoeing you wont need it. I really haven't used mine since school but it was a good learning tool then. The other thing is that angles don't really mean squat anyway.

That was my logic too Kevin there is no sense in getting the fancy smancy one with all the bells n wisles the brass one would surfice me and have it when need be.

I got one in my van, I believe made by Calvary. It is alum and you can read the angle from the bottom. I don't use it daily, but is nice sometime when talkin with a customer. I use it once in a while just to check myself while doing sliding shoes to make sure I keep the same angle on both hinds.

They'er nice to have when you corect the coustmer, as in "I'll bet they are within a degree, double or nothing on the shoeing charge".
I have one hanging on the box but never use it.

Hi all,

I have 2 that are exactly the same, one I use when I want to increase the angle and one when I want less, hee hee.

Unlike Patti and Kevin I use my hoof guage daily and while not invaluable it is a good tool to use on a daily basis even if you use it just to see if your feet are flat.
The only thing I don't like about the brass ones is that you can't read them while your under the horse.

Ill agree , they are real handy for checking for flat. The brass ones can get tweaked 'out of flat' a little easier than the thicker cast metal ones if they get squashed by anything in the tool box.

That is right! Who needs to pound iron anyways!

The way of the future is here boys! It has only taken what hundreds of years. I bet that in the next three or four centuries they will have a machine that will make obsolete a farrier. Hmmm...

Doubt it, but I do not plan to be around then.

So whats the differnce between all the differnt hoof guages?

You'll use it everyday if you do Standardbreds. You'll also want one of the ones you read while under the horse.

Glen, you're so right! I use to do Standardbreds a lot for the first 17 yrs., but wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole now. A gauge is a dangerous tool for a man's reputation when in the hands of suedo expert owner/trainer, or a wannabe farrier. You can make it dance! :) All kidding aside, it doesn't hurt to have one but once you have been at it awhile, you'll rarely use it except for the first reason mentioned above. John
