This was Josh's question and my answer. If anybody else has a question I'll answer it.

That does look nice, question though

Why leave the other heal with no support/protection? (weather its the damaged portion or not)

Thanks!

Mushroom shoes are not that popluar I guess, Mr. McClain has issues with them as well. But I have had sucess with them becuse I was taught how to apply them by Dad whos a plater and by Big and Little Roy Proctor who are harness horse shoers. A big part of a persons sucess with a type of shoe is exposure to those shoes and the knowledge on after care once they are applied and letting your clients know what to look for as far as problems. Same thing goes with any type of theraputic shoe, heart bars, Edss packages etc etc. Your sucsess level is greatly improved when you know what your doing.

I have used mushroom and half mushroom shoes with great sucess on horses with major heel abcesses or with what I call a "wet" crushed heel. What I consider a wet crushed heel is either a heel with a major corn that is seeping, or a heel that has black gunk in it (like a dead abcess but it is just **** that has gotten t****d up in the heel as it has been beaten down). In either case I clean the heel up as best I can and apply the shoe, leaving the affected area open where the owner or the groom can treat the area. I have found (and again this is just me) by using mushroom shoes or half mushroom shoes on heels like this I can get them to clean up and back to healthy horn in one to two shoeings though one shoeing is enough in most cases. In these cases where I have tried other things like a hospital plate etc, they just dont seem to clean up as quick becuse a shoe is covering a portion of the heel that needs treatment.

You need to keep in mind that the foot is only exposed to the elements when he is at work. The foot is then cleaned thouroughly and dressed with icthomal or whatever when the horse goes back to it's stall. I think that it is important to say I wouldn't put this type of shoe on a horse that lived in a dry pen (one without sand or bedding) or out in a paddock or pasture.

i hope that answered your question.

T.N. - I noticed that the shoe is slightly turned to the side that does not have the mushroom. Is there a purpose for that?

Thanks,

Tony

Not really Tony. Like I have said I don't remember as much as would like to about this horse the picture is from about 5 or 6 years ago, and I haven't had a chance to see if dad remembers her at all. He built this particular shoe, and I'm starting to think he saw he saw some issue I didn't.

Trosin; I have used normal, creased werckman shoe with a mushroom insert to correct underrun heels.. it works pretty well.

First of all Call me Tom or T.N. Yes, the inserts on the steel shoes do work well and thats what I generally use where I shoe too. I build my own and I will either use inch stock and leave it at inch (smaller widths for smaller feet) or taper down the 1" stock to better imitate the frog. A big thing that I do is I try to fit the top bend like you would a heart bar.

Tom,
I too like Mr Stovall am curious as to what effect if any the plate pictured had on the foot flight of that horse. Was it only that one shoe or did you guys make a pair?

Also, if you hadn't needed the three quarter would an aluminum pad have been just as good?

Did he clip this shoe? If so then wow. Not much to draw from on a racing plate.

Ok I talked to dad tonight and his response was:
(parphrased) It doesn't change the foot flight, you can't say never but I've not had a problem with it.

I don't think. I think for something like this mare had a shoe like Smitty built would have been preferable for a horse that did the kind of damage that this mare did to her foot.

In my considerably breif platting carreer, I got to see a lot of horses benifit from aluminium plates as far as getting them through varrious issues. As far as using them for a support device I can't see it. But like I said the more you know about applying a certain type of device the better your sucsess.

Changing the foot flight or helping the horse with an issue for a short time. Which is the lessor of two evils? Which is more necessary? IF it aides the horse and then allows thh horse to go back to a more normal shoe then why would foot flight matter that much? I know it would to the owner, but what about the making of a sound horse?

Tony,
We're talking about a racehorse here. In many ways they tend to be a whole different kettle of fish.

Ideally, like any horse you like to help them do whatever they do as best they can. In this case running around a racetrack. For obvious reasons you don't like to slow them down.

Sometimes you'll get one like Tom pictured with an injury of some kind. In a case like this the animal might not be racing well but at least is racing. This illustrates the value of a good horseshoer as part of the team.

Incidentally I'd like to mention that in racing circles Tom's father is known coast to coast as one of the best.

I for one would certainly never second guess a man like Harry Trosin about anything.
