TOPIC: three heat concave fun!

RE:three heat concave fun! 09 Jan 2007 01:09 #16

The trick is practice with a plan. I'll forge two types of heel: on most fronts, unless I am fitting a pad, i'll forge a pencily, hunter type; on most hinds, I'll used a hunter type on the medial and a checked, broader heel on the lateral.
To forge a hunter type in concave, I concentrate on four points. The outside thick corner, the inside grooved corner, the inside thick corner and the inside grooved corner. If you try to work the whole stock face it mashes out, will not knit and gets unpleasing to the asthetic eye.
I'll start on the outside thick edge with a 45 degree strike towards my belly, pulling that corner back, then two or three strikes on the thick edge into the stock with the hammer angled at a 45 to the perpendicular line of the stock. Set the start of your corner at the exact midline of the stock. Then move to the inside hollow edge, one blow at a 45 upstroke on the corner, then one blow at a solid fourty five into the stock will match the outside corner. Ypu can even angle both edges at the angle of your heel cut by slightly changing the hammer face angle. Flip the stock and repeat starting at exactly the midline. you should have this: > . I then use a folding blow to cover any slit in the heel and to round the point.
A checked heel is the same in working four corners, but I only fold the outside a third and the inside two thirds, creating a longer check and more steel exposed on the ouitside rim of the foot.
Sounds confusing, but practice with your drop pieces, and you will find a system and a rythem that works for you!
here is a pick of a huntery type with a slight heel cut angle

Heres one from from today. I misfiled the medial heel at the inside corner, so I have a corner on my "round" heel. That messes up the line down the frog and bar. I'll keep trying.

The foot burn from the anvil.. I straightened the medial branch a wack, the lateral a half a wack and brought the whole lat branch in a bump

dorsal view finished. What can I do other than the heel check on the medial side to bring this job to the next level? Different eyes see different things... let me know! Thanks

The shoe was offset just under an 1/8, I can go a full 1/8. I did not like the medial heel at all! When you say set back on the toe, do you meen closing the rim or a blunter fit of the shoe? Lateral nails were a bit weak...
Thanks Smitty.

Smitty,
you really have an amazing eye! I ran the shoe wild ( a bit long) a 1/4 inch in my measurement. You are right, I would get the appearence I am looking for if I safed the inside heel closer to the toe, and filed a more sloped heel on the inside branch. That would create the distinction and classy look I am gunning for: where do i send the check for the education?
Thanks,
Jason
