For the blokes having trouble with there stick welding you need to buy an inverter they are so much easier to get a rod started because there dc & a hell of a lot smaller & lighter to Carry around just one other thing you need at least 5% silicon in aluminium to weld it so don't buy cheap alum plates there are some cheap asian imports that only contain 3%

Hi Smitty,

In post #27 you said it takes you a couple of minutes to weld a bar in that shoe the way you decribed. And a couple of minutes on the other one I guess.

That's too long........

Thanks anyway!

Well the thing is Smitty I keep comparing this welding aluminum with welding steel. Maybe I shouldn't. Buying them is an option and I do, all kinds I've got a van packed with aluminum. Welding would make me a lot more flexible in my shoeing horses with aluminum. Also think about those really narrow footed horses. I could just fit a wedged aluminum shoe and weld a bar in later. And what about pre made bar shoes? If I had this welding aluminum under control like I have steel I could just cut them in half and weld the halves back together.

Man there ain't no telling what I could do if I get this thing working for me!

I've been running this through my mind now for quite a while. Maybe it's time I started buying things!

lets know if you find another way Ronald

the rods work out less than a Euro
the pair of normal alies 5 to 6 Euros
a bottle Matt gas 12 Euros

have to work out how many pair you get out of bottle
1 rod per shoe

If you pre heat the aluminum shoe first it will get to weilding temp faster for your torch.

For those who have trouble with rod sticking you ether need to turn up the amps on the weilder or get a smaller dia rod. The biggest problem with the 110 volt buzz box welders they usually don't have high enough amps to get a good clean weld.

As for the Henrob it a nice torch however you still need the rest of the set up gauges, hoses, ect.. This makes it very spendy. You can buy a complete torch kit minus the gas cylinders at Home Dept for around $170.00 and it will do anything you need to do for a whole lot less.

Ron I just bought the Henrob 2000, Cobra torch per Tom Bloomers suggestion and I like it. I have not tried it on alum, but it is suppose to be great for welding alum. I have used it to cut and weld steel, works great. I purchased the master kit. After I got the kit I found it is also a good idea to get there low pressure gauges.

Here is there web site. They are great people to deal with and very customer friendly. http://www.cut-like-plasma.com/
