I know with my stick welder at my barn i can weld up a bar shoe in a few minutes, just turn it together walk over and weld it up. Are you havening trouble getting the weld to start? If so it helps to get the stick a little warm by repeatedly scratching it on to a grounded surface like the the actual grounding clamp from the welder. Not enough for it to weld to the clamp, but just rake it across a bunch of times and the weld will start MUCH easier without stiction.

I also used a 110 welder at a customers place and it worked just as well.

I have Oxy/Acc in my truck however they need to be re-filled.

I guess Ill be going with thte little bottles (they can be filled anywhere correct?)
Buy two bottles for AC. And three for OX you will use more OX. That way you have some spares in the shop. Set up an account with the local compressed gas dealer (NORCO in my area) that way when you run out of gas all you have to do is ether give them a call and they will drop by and swap you out or you can drop by their place and swap out depending on what kind of deal you set up with them. A welding supply house would be a good place as well.

As for cylinder size. The 2ft tall bottles would be just right size to install in most farrier rigs.

I actually have both in my workshop and much prefer the finish and the integrity of the weld with oxy/ace.

I just have an account with a spare and exchange system. Albeit I'm not travelling very often with mine. They tend to be static.

Yes it's 220 here. So? I mean for welding it's great. I did some welding in the US and I didn't notice any difference.

The arc welder I use for bars and stuff in steel shoes. I would like to be able to do the same thing with aluminum shoes too. That's where the ac/ox deal comes in. A lot smaller and more versatile than a AC/DC welder. Now I need to master the welding aluminum with ac/ox

You need to use a special aluminum flux, but it welds aluminum very nicely. Uses a LOT LESS fuel than a regular Oxy/Ace setup.

By 70% huh? Do you carry this? I really like that handle, but how hot does it get? I do little projects that sometime have me running a torch for +/- an hour.

I was getting a new torch head this week, maybe not.

I carry an ancient 110v 100 Amp stick welder in the truck that I use for putting on the occasional clip (long footed horses) or making a bar shoe out of an open heeled keg.

I try to do most of that welding back in the shop where I have a 220v 230 amp welder.

Smitty, are you using that e4043 rod? Never thought of one of them for aluminum, too cold for steel IMO.

I just ran out to the truck and tried the Mapp gas...

All I had was 1/8 in rod and got a good braze but not really a weld, Ill pick up a couple types of rod tom. and keep going with it.

I can weld steel easy enough in the coal forge in the truck. Never had much luck with Alum., but this may be the answer!

Smitty,

You are the man! What a heck of a little trick, I went and got just regular alum. welding rod with no flux and welded a bar into a shoe like ive been doin it that way my whole life.

Problem solved!

Thanks
