Have you thought about a swing out anvil arm? One that attatches to your pickup reciever hitch? Actually we added two more, one to each member of the frame and use three so the swingout arm is soid. Than we use a jack for a trailer (a good one) to have something under the anvil. My fabricator friend made one and I copied a design and built one myself. I never have to lift my anvil. Yo can make the base any sixe you need to.

Spend some extra money and buy that wooden deal with aluminum legs somebody out there manufactures. Don't they call it the stump? I love it although I couldn't use it on my anvil.

Well theres the problem Ron. You use it under your anvil, not on your anvil. :p

Ron, you surprise me, using what looks like an industrial anvil instead of a farrier's anvil with shaping horns! I guess I'm just spoiled, soft, fussy or all the above. :D John

The problem I see with swing outs is that there is always the arm in the way. Both to walk around and under the horn. Just my point of view, but I would go with a stump type. I use a three leg heavy iron with a thick rubber pad, like a charm it works.

Josh,

I will, It may take me a little bit of time, but I will do it. While I may be ale to do most things, posting, let alone getting digital pictures to the computer just belie me at this moment.

Someone mentioned the stump and the elbow. IF it was in reference to the swingout arm, you preadjust the height so that the top of you anvil is at the level of your knuckles when standing beside it; arms at your side. Then you mount the unit after making adjustments accordingly before making it solid.

Bill,

To answer your concerns. Walking around it is no problem. It is online with the side of the pickup. The extra three feet I walk I do not mind because I do not have to pick up and move my anvil at each stop. Especially after a long day of mangy horses that have been pulling on me.

As for the space under the horn, there is the same amount under the horn if I place it on "the stump", a rock, a metal stand etc. The distance between the bottom of the horn and the stand ( whatever it is) is the same. If you like, turn the anvil around so the the horn is not over the awing out arm. I chose not to do that because I do not want a horse to somehow have an iron enema.

Good day,

Tony

I set my horn pointing toward the truck for the same reason, but I like your phrasing better.
Ive thought of a swing out in the hitch reciever or just a carying bracket that I could move the anvil from to a stump. Would be less lifting and more room in the truck.
Ya got me thinking,

If you work close to your truck like most of us do, then never have the horse's backside facing the truck. If it pulls back it would be in your truck and like you said, the anvil would end up in it's donkey! Best, Gary

My anvil is on a slide out tray that is the same height as my stand("The Stump"). And it does make for much less lifting and more room in the truck. It has been one of the best modifications I made to the truck.

I always try to keep the rule "the horse should be looking at the back of your truck".
A rancher once was "working" with a horse to get it ready for me to shoe while I was doing the other one. I looked up to see it running full tilt backwards with a front leg tied up, into a heavy stock fence, about ten feet from my truck. I thought that she wouldnt have slowed down till she was compleetly in the bed of the truck and on fire. Then would have started phase two of the wreck. I told him she didn't even need shoes and we let her go.
