TOPIC: Shock Tamers

Shock Tamers 12 Oct 2006 14:31 #1

Well I just got back from the Congress show and it was a fun 2 days. Bought lots of stuff for the farm and seen some really nice horses. Run into a fella that sells Shock Tamers. He give me a set to try out and some paperwork on them and I told him I would give them a try. Only been shoeing a few years so I had never heard of them. Just wondered if some of you have used them. Why did you use them and what were the results and your opinion of them.

They also have a chemical out that is suppose to kill the bacteria in an abcess and he said that you should never never have to resect a foot. Thoughts?

Thanks for your info.

Ive used shock tamers from time to time. They are fairly soft with good rebound. They work. I'd like to here more about this abcess treatment.

I used them about 5 years ago on a TB mare. I did not notice much of difference between the shock tamers and a leather pad. I put them on because I was doing a lot of road riding and the mare bruised easily. Also, if I can remember they were quite expensive about $20 a pair. I have not used them since.

I'm still waiting for the peer reviewed double blind scientific studies to be sent to me from the Shock Tamer pad guy . . . it's been 3 years.

I am not familiar with any method of treating an abcess that requires resecting a foot. :) There's a bunch of chemicals that will kill the bacteria in an abcess. Which one of the standard antibacterial chemicals have they repackaged under a new name? Do they have published double blind and peer reviewed studies to back up their claims for this new product? I love the look on peoples faces when they are hawking a product as scientifically proven and you ask to see their scientific evidence. Usually they just hand you a bunch of testimonials from people who tried the product and "Just Loved it!"

Sorry, I consider skepticism a virtue. ;)

Well you should Tom. There's nothing like resecting a foot and putting it in a 5% formaldehyde solution to get rid of an abcess permanently!

Back in the days when Arabian show horses could only wear one pad made of one material, the Shock Tamers provided a good option. I used a bunch of them. Once the rules changed, I stopped using them partly because the manufacturer sold direct to horseowners and really wasn't supporting our industry. Had several owners question why I charged what I did to install a pad they had purchased elsewhere, so I just told them that so long as I was doing the work of cutting the pad, fitting the pad, and providing the under-pad hoof packing, my fees would remain the same as if I had provided the pad in the first place. And, the the wide selection of pads available to us, I became totally disinterested in using the Shock Tamers.

I used a few pairs some years ago on demand from horse owners who saw ads, and some supplied them to me themselves. I didn't find them any different in performance from a plain old flat Farrier Pride #2. And the ones with the removable center sucked..the center would come out and couldnt be put back in.
