I use a 100# Scott anvil (designed and sold here in VA) and it sits on the Anvil Stump.......great set up.... round horn and a tapered heel......I do everything hot and it works great for me

I recently cut out circles from an old inner tube and glued them to the 'feet' of the Anvil Stump......it seems to 'walk' less on the concrete now

Where could I find some pics of a Scott anvil how heavy do they make them?

Nice big face. Great horn. I really liked it and it's heavy!!!

J.H. Shoeing,

I also use the Scott #100 anvil w/ the Anvil Stump. Talk about a real "thumper". The horn is very similar to the 200# Kohlswa, face is nice and wide with tapered heel. Great anvil and reasonably priced. I believe Scott Collier will be @ Danny Ward's with some of them in November. Right now they are only available in 100# but I think he is going to do a 200# also.

Happy Hunting!

Hi Derin,
I've heard good things about that anvil. Could you post a few pictures? What the price for the anvils?

I use a #80 Swan anvil. I've had a #70 NC, #100 Emerson, and a #70 JHM. I like the swan out of all of them. I have a #200 Kohlswa at home along with a #150 JHM. There both great shop anvils.

I have been shaping with a 50# anvil since I started shoeing six years ago.

if your holding the shoe without tongs any farriers anvil with an extra 20lbs, turning cams or a heel hooking hole will feel like a big upgrade. the NC short sugars are well designed for cold shaping saddle horse and mule shoes

I started on a 130 lb Peter Wright then found a 100 lb one. It works pretty nice. I have an aluminum tripod stand that I keep attached to it. I pick it up and strap it down to my trailer floor and then don't have to set it up all the time. It saves me bolting it down to the stand every time. Can't stand a bouncy anvil. Still needs a bit of finishing on the face but oh well it works great for me. I first had a 100lb JHM out of school. Could not turn a shoe to save my life on that thing. The guy i was working with had a nice peter wright then I'd go work on mine and couldn't get it going I guess. Now my big anvil is sitting in his shop strapped down on a wood stand. Pretty nice to turn shoes.
Getting harder to find them old anvils. Sure nice to pick them up when you see one.

Ive been using a 70 lb NC Big Face. Its a decent anvil, though I've been thinking about a Future 3. The NC big face has a big face like the name says. It also has turning cams and a turning hole. The cams are on the side of the anvil and are pretty tough to use especially with clipped shoes. I dont really ever use the turning hole. I'd recommend it for a light anvil on a budget. If you want a real nice light anvil look at the future series by delta.

I'll try to get a few pics of my set up this weekend and then make an attempt to post them here.. haven't tried that one yet :)

I talked to Scott Collier and he said that it is only the 100# anvil for now.... he will have some at Danny Ward's clinic in Nov. and also at the convention

I can tell you that my shoe shaping has really improved since I switched from the Calvary 112# anvil (flat horn) to this Scott anvil

I've used a 100lb+/- ringin'Ranger wide face for most of my career. Which probably goes a long way towards explaining why I'm mostly deaf in my right ear.

It sits on an Anvil Stump when in use. It stows on a slide out tray under my truck so I don't have the lifting when getting it out or putting it away. The slide out and the Stump are the same height so its just a level transfer from one to the other. Going to that setup improved my sunny disposition and sure saved my back. :)

Rick,

Do you secure your anvil somehow to the stump? I have a piece of barstock that I tighten down over the "feet" of my Scott anvil...Makes a huge difference. Goes from a ringer to a dead thumper. Also a magnet helps too.

This is the anvil I now use, it is a TFS1. Really like the shape of the horn. I had a NC #70 I traded for this one. Best trade I ever made. I made the stand for it.

Here's my everyday anvil. 200 lb Kohlswa affixed to a solid stump, hollow and filled with sand. No need to pick it up (it sits in my trailer and I don't move it), thus saving my back, elbow and wrist. The bigger and more solid the anvil, the more energy transfered to the steel, and not back up your arms through the tongs and hammer.
