TOPIC: Truck Vs Trailer revisted

RE:Truck Vs Trailer revisted 12 Sep 2006 11:24 #16

Tom and Josh,

Ok, I will build an enclosed trailer with a swing out arm and fan, then invite you down to shoe with me here in Aiken the first two weeks in August.

I am sorry but I still don't think a fan and moving the forge outside the trailer will still be enough to deal with the heat extremes of the deep south in the summer. After all I vacationed in Tampa, FL in July to get away from the heat here.

Just to let you know I consume 2 PediaLyte drinks a day,and eat one banana, to compensate for electrolyte loss shoeing in the summer here.

I still think standing on the outside of the trailer to work would still be my best bet.

Dianne,
Im from Texas and always had an enclosed trailer down there, I had side doors on each side that really help with ventilation. I notice that the 4star trailers that brent is outfitting have air condition/heater options like a camper type .

Just a tought...

The other thing i was wondering...

It sound to me that you pretty much like the thought of the stonewell trailer, why sell your truck? Just roll that bad boy up to brents and have him put it on a trailer.

I'm only hours from you Dianne so I know the heat you are speaking of. I don't work inside my trailer unless its cold/raining. The only thing that I really don't have is a roll out anvil stand so I don't have to pick it up anymore. I have spoken to Brent about it in the past but haven't done anything yet. I pick it up now and set it on my stand. The 4 star trailers that he is working on now are really nice and the fold down windows will provide plenty of ventilation especially w/ a fan running. I don't think the air unit would be the way to go.......I'd lay down and go to sleep on a real hot day..... :D

I run the air conditioner in my horse trailer with an inverter. The setup in the pictures has been working for 6 years. It powers the 7000btu air conditioner (see the roof of the trailer) for 9 hours at 95degF. and 95% humidity. When the compressor is running the air conditioner draws 16amps @ 120VAC. The inverter can deliver a continuous 30amps of 120VAC for 2.1 hours. It cost me $1500 and two days work to build and install the system.

I would be happy to design an air flow system and a power supply for your shoeing trailer. I'm planning to move to the "deep south" in 4 years, and I will be shoeing out of a well ventilated mobile shop. When I said a fan, I ment having a strong breeze blowing through your hair - you know, for those supermodel Kodak moments.

I've got more than the cost of that trailer invested in my shoeing rig. More than the cost of my shoeing rig invested in the truck that pulls that trailer . . . the truck and trailer are my wife's toys that I bought for her when I was "working for a living." Since I quit my real job and took up shoeing horses, every day is a holiday. No meetings with vice presidents and directors. No telephone calls in the middle of the night from some guy in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Rotterdam, or Sidney telling you the network is down.

Tom,

I patiently await the moment you compliment me on my shoeing abilties and not just appearence. After all, we all clean up well.

The respect I have for you as a farrier is due to your excellent reputation among your peers and the idea that a shoe manufacturer has asked you to endorse their product. Those facts bear a lot of weight in my mind when it comes to how I precieve you as sucessful farrier. However, I haven't personally seen your "shoeing abilities" demonstrated nor have I read any discussion threads where you discuss biomechanics theories, nor have I seen any pictures posted of your work. If someone asked me if you were a dogmatic or a pragmatic farrier, I would not be able to answer that question honestly, because I do not have any first hand information.

OTOH, I could extrapolate a few things from what I do know. The fact that you are willing to try a plastic shoe as an alternative to traditional metal shoes tells me that you are open minded and willing to try new technology. The fact that you participate on these forums and invest time and money in continuing education - like the IHCS tells me that you are dedicated and passionate about this trade. However, unlike some of the other horseshoeing babes on this forum, namely Patty and Kim, I have not seen you argued with me or anyone else yet about shoeing methods or theories.

Those whose abilities I have complimented have either made a solid argument by backing up their assertions with a solid scientific foundation, or posted pictures of their work or responded to requests for educational help on difficult topics. Although you may have done that here on these forums, I have not had the opportunity to see it. My suspisions lean toward the idea that you are a damned good hand at this trade. However, I haven't had an opportunity to confirm my suspicions with real evidence.

Meanwhile, if you're going to Danny Wards, maybe you can give me some hands-on pointers on fullering or gait analysis or shoe traction profiles or we can argue about static vs. dynamic balance methods and theories. Maybe we'll get a chance to shoe a horse together and Jaye can take pictures.
