TOPIC: The hazards of rain....

The hazards of rain.... 01 Sep 2006 01:10 #1

Our latest hurricane (that never was) "Ernesto", as it fizzled out, did happen to arrive yesterday morning and begin to dump a bit of rain as I was finishing up the morning's horses. So I quickly loaded my tools and was muttering under my breathe about having to clean off the inevitable rust , as they had gotten wet.

Finalized the bill with the client and proceeded on my way. Getting rained out of the rest of the day's appointments allowed me to acquire an early dinner.
While the truck was parked in the restaurant lot some ****** decided to help themselves to my entire shoeing box of tools!

Obviously in the desire to stay semi dry, I had forgotten to lock my truck doors. And then happened to be in the right place for the wrong person to abscond with MY tools! This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.# lazy, good for nothing rat ba*tard!

OF course I didn't even discover the theft until I arrived at this morning's first stop. Open the doors to the truck and stand there ******founded at the gaping cavity where my shoeing box should be residing! I managed to scrounge up enough alter tools scattered in the truck; my draft rasp, foal nippers and the shoeing hammer which had apparently fallen out of the box before the theives arrived, at least allowed me to get the loose shoes pulled and the hooves trimmed. I borrowed the owner's hoof pick. My hoof knives I keep in a locking small tool cabinet and the theives apparently didn't stick around the back of the truck long enough to discover where I hung the key to unlock the little cabinet.

SInce the purchase of my new truck, I haven't had time to rehang my forge tools on the door, so they have been shipping around in a box on the shelf, which was now buried under some dirty Tshirts. SO thankfully I still have all my forging tools. My power tools get stored in overhead bins, so I still have them too.

This was definitely an open and grab theft. My anvil which gets strapped down is still with me, as is my anvil stand. The theft could have been a lot worse, but MAN it chaps my hide that these people think they have the right to MY tools and subsequently MY livelihood!

Another life's lesson learned! Never mind the rain.... LOCK the friggin truck!

What makes me mad is the a-holes don't even know what they have or any concept of the craft that can be acomplished with them.
I've given al my extas away, but maby some of the folk here can help with some odds and ends.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Check local pawn shops and ebay....My vet got ripped off and I found some of her stuff on ebay. Did you stamp your name on your tools? I found that helpful when shoeing in big barns with alot of other farriers working together.
I have a pretty good collection of Heller nail driving hammers and pulloffs, I'd be happy to send you down a replacement. Let me know and I'll PM you some photos.
I try to take one day at a time -- but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Kim,
Also sorry to hear of your loss. I had that happen to me once so I know what a PITA it is.

At that time I learned that people who do floors use a tool that looks a lot like nippers and pull offs.

To the uninitiated all of our tools look like pliers but to non-horse people who have some knowledge of construction type work they might think of them as linoleum tools. This could be a good way to track them down unless some skumbeg wannabee horseshoer or dirt farmer got them.

Thanks all for the offers, I appreciate it, but I do have enough older tools, to make do until I can get replacements. I was stock piling a few nippers to get resharped, and have another set of pull offs. For now I am hammer clinching until I get my new clinchers. WHile some clients think its "cool" that I am doing it the "old fashioned way", I really really do appreciate how much easier a complete set of tools makes my day!

Interseting things about pawn shops in Florida that I have learned are that usually the pawned items are presented by anyone BUT the crook. Each week the pawn shops submit a list to the Police dept. for matching against reported items. Then a judge has to determine actual ownership. The police do an investigation of the person pawning the items, while the true owner of the items has to pay back the pawn shop! Then the owner has to pay the courts to file restitution against the crook!

So not only do I get ripped off, lose work, and have to pay to replace the missing tools, I have to pay to get them back IF they are found!

And who says crime doesn't pay?

Kim

Sorry to hear about the loss.

Almost, and maybe even more so, is the outrageous law that makes you make restitution to the pawn shop for things that were stolen from you. If anything, the pawn shop should be charged with receiving stolen goods, and made to give back the money accepted from the unsuspecting buyer, and then let the pawn shop go after the thief for restitution. Truely an unbelievable situation.
