I got a call yesterday from a customer with a lame horse I had done the previous day. This horse has very very thin hoof walls. When doing I have to be so carefull driving nails. There was no reaction to shoeing that day. Upon examination yesterday, I found my third nail (medial) was a little sensative to testing. Pulled it out, no fluids came out. No more reaction in the hoof with the testers. Also the horse would readly lift the other hoof. I flushed the nail hole with iodine. Horse still limped a bit, but no pulse, no warm hoof. I told her to watch if for a few days. I call her vet told him what happened incase something is more wrong. On this guy I use MX50s and really set the shoe wide. Next time I think I will hand make with very fine hole.

Actually right now I am making quite a few due to the fact I am now required by Danish law to become certified. In the forging part of the certification shoe size is given in millimeters. Points are subtracted for each millimeter out of stated size I am given. I am given a premeasured length of 25mm x 10mm steel to make the shoes. The hands on part is shoeing complete one horse to standard, then shoeing 1 front foot on a seperate horse with sole and packing. I had a friend who passed the test this past winter. He said when he was done shoeing the complete horse, the testers lifted the hooves, put water in the sole. If water leaked out between the shoe and the foot points were subtracted.

Then I make one pair of parallel shoes, fronts with toe clips, an old time danish workhorse shoe with healcocks their special way. Then from the hat I will pull name of one special shoe, it will either be a ring shoe/toe clip, shoe for interference, flat toe hind shoe/ side clips. Ring shoe is from 40mm long, 20mm wide x 10mm thick. Both back shoes are made from 25mm x 10mm x 30mm long. All shoes are creased and you state what nails you will use to the testers before you start.

The written part is I believe a 3 day event. There are different stations, you look at the problem, write down what it is, then how you will correct it. The second day you go through an examination I believe with a Vet asking the questions. Then the third day you go before a board, they go over all your answers and you have to defend any differences you have with their stated answers. Once you have passed this part 2 official tester will come to my shop where I will do the hands on practical.

Oh did I forget to tell you I am learning all the Danish terms as well. For this old guy this is the hardest part.

So I have some driving horses I make hand mades for because they are the only ones I have that sizes. I also make some "normal" sized shoes and put them on. One thing I got to say for them, they last a lot longer than the keg shoes.

After the testing is done, I will cut down on hand made stuff I think. I always carry barstock in my van if I have to make something.

Great advice here.

One thing I would like to add.

If a shoe it fitted tight, nails will tend to come out low. On a wide fitted shoe its a lot easier to drive nails higher. So when on one side of the foot nails come out low and on the other side the nials come out high, you need to check your fitting.

Because it's cheating

Seriously, I'd rather do my modifications on the anvil with a hot shoe. I think you get a nicer outcome. Also, I have seen guys that constantly use a stall jack while they are under a horse, they don't walk real upright. :D Going back to the anvil gives me a chance to straighten up. I think I'll last longer if I avoid cold shoeing on a stall jack.

Well Smitty like you I was taught to change the angle of my forepunch when moving towards the last nailhole. Keeping it at an angle for the toe nail holes to almost up straight for the last nail holes.

I feel the area on the hoof where I want the nail to exit, then aim the nail for that while I'm still feeling it. That is usually pretty accurate. You can ever-so-slightly tweak the tip of the nail one way or the other to encourage a higher or lower exit if there's something altering the course of the nail such as an old nailhole or super-hard horn.

This is how I had been taught. The only thing I've changed is that when I feel the area on the hoof that I want the nail to exit, I seem to automatically want to use my ring finger. Don't know if there's a good scientific reason for that, or if that is just me.

Good luck!
In my experience too most apprentices get a grasp of this with the " feel & aim at the ringfinger " sort of method pretty quick. The proper shoe fitting is half the nailing though.
