I've used my Duvall pad cutters for more than 25 years and all I ever do is replace the blades periodically. They will cut just about anything, but only will cut up to a #3 wedge. Ive used them for #4 wedges, but they wont cut(at least very well) the thick end of that size wedge.

Considering what the Duvall originally cost me, and the replacement blades I've installed over the years versus the number of pads/year and what I charge for pads, the Duvall had been both a time saver and a revenue enhancer.

Out of curiosity, why does a band saw make one look much more professional?

Are the manufacturers of Pad Cutters aware of this? Are the thousands of professional farriers who regularly and routinely use Pad Cutters aware of this blot/stain on their professional persona?

Rest your neck ricky~No,the pad makers don't have a clue? Now quote me!
How do you cut pads? One at a time?

Depends on what the needs are. And, generally speaking, yes, one at a time. What's your point?

And, do try to answer my original question. To wit: "Why does a band saw make one look more professional?"

Whats your opinion on whether or not farriers who use a pad cutter are professionals?

If i just gave you the answer,it would be like cheating? I feel it best when a man has to earn it!!!!! You can't sit around all day waiting for the phone to ring, can ya? Ask somebody else,i don't want to talk to you anyway! I don't like master farriers i don't want anything to do with them~I feel they should stick to their own kind and keep their secrets to themselves?

How would you know what a man does?

Non sequitur.

I expect not. Your own inadequacies and ineptitudes become much more accentuated.

As usual Just Passin Gas, you are hoist by your own petard.
(perhaps even you can grasp the subtle pun of the last sentence?)

For your edification, its quite the opposite. There! You've learned something new. Who said an old dog can't learn?

Thank you for your acknowledgement of my divinity. That said, were your vision sharper and more clear, you would have seen that in the photo in question, I am wearing a tuxedo, not religious vestaments(unless of course men and women of the cloth of your aquaintance wear tuxedos when engaged in their chosen path).

I changed my avatar because it suited me to do so. Perhaps you can, though you lack true religious stature, divine what my current avatar is projecting?
Were you tired of being god?
That role is something of which I never tire. :)

What do you think Rick should I too go and get rid of my Duval Pad Cutter for the negative image it portrays?

Up till now I've always been pretty happy with the way it cuts pads.

Neck problem? I know nothing about any physical ailments or maladies the man might have. Sounds like you must know him or have been on these boards before.

Admittedly I think I usually hold my own pretty good but I bet he could probably blow me away at conjugating french verbs. Je parle tres mal francais aussi.

If you have come here looking for a verbal sparring match I really think you may have bitten off more than you can chew with him.

Point being, I'm my own man. I don't think he really needs a tag team partner.

Have a good night.

Just Passin Through passes off this comment:

Ahemmm and your point is?....

That cutting pads is difficult?

I've seen that Duvall pad cutter in action and it seems that it doesn't take a whole lot of effort to turn a hand crank!

I personally use a jig saw which I have installed inverted under a homemade "table jig". I have used this set up for close to ten years. Makes a bit of noise, but slices through pads made of plastic, urethane and leather and often double pads of mixed variety!

This jig saw set up takes up very little space in my truck and is always ready for useage - no setting up or vising necessary - just run the extension cord from the barn outlet to my truck receptacle and voila! Power pad cutting!

For those barns that don't have power - I have a power inverter.

As to your query to Rick regarding cutting pads one at a time, I do too. That is one pad assembled to the shoe which has been preshaped to the hoof. Doesn't make sense to "cookie cut" pads when the shoe shapes can be so individual. Heck the manufacturer already has the pads identically cut or molded; which is why I cut them one at a time to fit the individual shoe!

My jig saw set up eliminates a lot of touch up rasping.

After cutting the pad which I have attachred to the shoe using two 3.5 race nails hooked over , I bevel the pad edges on my disc/ belt sander. Before I had my disc/belt sander I'd finish the pad edges using myy anvil vice.

A band saw? On a truck? Are you referring to a table band saw or the portable band saws? Either case would mean an investment of considerable sum for pieces of equipment that take up large amounts of realestate in a mobile worksjop, for rather limited usage.

A jig saw or duvall pad cutter is a much better investment.

Nowadays one can easily acquire a battery operated jigsaw; or even a battery operated multi interchangeable tool which offers a drill, a sander, a flashlight, a circular saw, a saws all, a jig saw, a vaccuum etc..

Oh yeah, by the way I happen to be a female farrier!

I really do wish some people in this trade would get over the idea that this job is a job of brawn. While it is not a job for the faint hearted or wimps, it certainly is a job more of finesse and brains rather than brawn!

Kim
