just wondering what you guys doing this for a living are using in the way of rasps. Which ones seem to last longest? Any tips for making them last longer? I make sure I get the foot cleaned out good, so I'm not rasping gravel. My most recent purchase was one of the Black Diamond Aggressive cuts, and they mean it...it'll take off some foot in a hurry.

I have been using the Wood-Miller Rasps for about year. They hold their edge and are almost too sharp and I can't wait for them to dull a little bit. I average about 60 to 80 horses per rasp were when I used the Heller Legends I would only get 30 to 40 head out of them.

Rafterp
I use simmon red tang and Johnson the Johnson’s have changed in the last year from black master seconds to heller and I do not use them any more. I panicked last winter when I heard there was going to be a big cost increase in price and bought 3 cases so I will be using the red tang for a long time.

I have used Save Edge for yrs and still like them, but due to cost I gave the Woods/Miller a try and find them to work fine.
I have more hoof to file than most of you so using a sharp rasp that holds an edge is a priority for me.

I e-mailed Woods/Miller in Canada and asked if they would send me a rasp to try on trial. John sent one out and it was as he described so I am now ordering them from Canada. Approx. a $3.00/$4.00 difference at this time in cost per rasp

Has anyone got a website to order Woods-Miller rasps? I googled them, but came up with zilch.

Two words;

Wood-Miller

they're sharp
they cost less
they last

(the rasps i've received are so sharp, I'm afraid to touch them without gloves on)

type in your search engine for woodmiller rasps. It is woodmiller saw and knife blades, you will see they have an adverticement for the hoof rasps on the page.
Johns e-mail is on the page. Tell him Bruce Matthews-Northeast Drafthorse Shoeing from Vermont told you about him.
Never hurts to let your suppliers know you tell others about them and their products.

On the other side of the coin. The free rasp I got last year didn't last 20 horses? We were and still are going through a long dry spell and the feet are very hard due to lack of rain but I need a rasp that will work on more that the last one did. Save-Edge is carrying me right now.

John was kind enough to send me one of his rasps to try(actually he sent me two and I gave one to my partner to use). We both liked the rasp though it too k a while for me to adjust to it.

I've used the Heller Legend since it first came on the market, so it is what I compared the WM to. Much as I liked the WM, I found myself repeatedly going back to using the Heller.

All things considered, I think that I am going to order a box of WM's and give them more of a workout.

I might have just got a bad one. Things happen. It felt lighter to me also but it might have just been that one rasp? Who knows. Best, Gary

G.Day Fellers

John Mate ,maaaaaate maaayyyyetie ;) I am so sorry I havent posted sooner

I got the rasps about two weeks before I got my foot busted up by a horse and then about two weeks later I broke my wrist , so I didnt get to use them for a bit
I started back to work about a month ago and have used all the rasps

New they were very nice to use looked good and cut lovely

once they dulled I didnt perservier to much longer as my wrist was and is giveing me some trouble Id change to a new one
Id average around thirty five horses

On inspection of each rasp as I put them aside for buffing I was delighted to see that they had held up well meaning there were no damaged or chipped teeth and the rasps wernt servearley blunt just a lill dull and therefore I thought they would buff up well

Farriers buffing up rasps is a fact of life that you and I have spoken about and as your company seems to have acepted that and is trying to produce a good rasp you should do well
I havent buffed one of the new lot you sent me yet , but if there as good as the test types you sent me earlier Im sure I'll be happy

As Ive said before I believed that many rasps had changed for the worse as they werent holding there eage nor accsepting a new one very well at all

the shape size an and gullet in the teeth were such that when bluntened through work and then buffed would take the top of the tooth off flattening or brodening the top and ruining it

rasps that Id used 6 or so years abo particularly the simmons black master were fantastic AND FOR A BATTLER LIKE ME were a god send which let me put a lill more into the families coffers instead of the big guys pockets
remember we pay two to three times as much as you blokes do for your rasps or anything Farriery related for that matter

Ive an old one and a late modle one and they are quite different in their teeth configeration

So John I thank you hole heartedly for you huge efforts In getting the rasps to me you are a good bloke true to you word
Im sure you'll put as much into keeping your mob on the track in trying to produce a better product for the Farrier

Keep doing that and you'll do well , dont and you wont
and there's nothing or no one like a Farrier to let you know ;)

I.ll let you know how the rasps buff up
thanks again Mate

Hey Red...excuse my ignorance, but how do you buff up a rasp? Do you work it on a bench grinder? What do you buff it with?
