Im not sure if these are rebuilds or hand made tools. but they look half decent. I wouldnt mind giveing them a try. Wish I didnt just spend 120 on a pair of St Criox nippers rebuilt to half rounds.

Last year I bought a new pair of GE half round nippers. A buddy of mine bought a pair of MFC half round nippers. A few weeks ago I went on the road for a day with my buddy. We were working on this foundered horse. It had been very dry for the past month and so the horse's hooves were hard as rocks. I asked my buddy if he was going to nip the excess toe off this foundered horse. He said that the foot was too hard and that, "Your half rounds won't touch it." I said, "Maybe YOUR half rounds won't touch it, but watch this." Then I proceeded to chop those toes back down to normal dimensions with my GEs. I spent about 30 seconds on each hoof. My buddy's MFC half rounds couldn't do the job because the blades were too thick. The GE half rounds, like their regular nippers, have a very shallow slope to the cutting edge and a very thin blade. Everybody else's half rounds, including the ones you are looking at here have a thicker blade.

Next time you are shopping at your farrier supply, pick up all of the different brands of nippers and compare their blade thickness to the GEs. Take a real close look . . . ther is no substitute. Then ask yourself, do I want to slice through the horn with no resistance, or do I want to muscle a fat blade through the horn.

You can tell who the farriers are that don't use GE nippers. They have bigger pecs and forearms. :)

Tom, next time bring a torch or a heat gun. Just heat up the horn and it will be as soft as butter. No need to ruin fine tools on rock hard horn.

That reminds me of a remark made by an apprentice of mine. Years ago I send him off to a schooling day organized by the Dutch farrier association. It was at Utrecht University, pretty big and he could not find his way.

After searching a lot he came into an auditorium filled as he described it with "men with low foreheads and thick forearms". His new colleagues :D

I won a pair of cloverleaf nippers a couple of years ago. They were OK, not like GE's but decent enough for nipping feet in New England. I'm using a pair of StCroix nippers now (gift certificate) they're pretty nice. :)

I'd steer clear of the MFC tools though.

Ive have used the cloverleaf tools. I like them! I did not like the feel of the reins on the nippers (I agree its tuff to beat GE's) But I really thought of them as nice tools.

I still use the nail nippers on a daily basis (6 years now)

I tried a pair of the hoof nippers. I guess I've been spoiled too long by using GE's, but the Cloverleaf nippers just didn't seem to feel or cut right. They got consigned to the discard pile and may well have ended up being given to someone to use to cut either the twine or wire on hay bales.

Chopping away at that horn didn't hurt those GEs one bit. As long as there's no grit embedded in the horn, my GEs hold up great. I do like the idea of the heat gun, but I haven’t ever felt like there was much strain or wear and tear on my tools or me. I touch up the blades on my GE half rounds with a diamond hone and a buffing wheel about 4 times a year. I touch up my GE regular nippers about every two weeks and have them rebuilt about every 4 to 6 months.

I suppose that if I did more horses, then I would wear my tools out a lot faster. I come from the school of “charge more and work less.”

WOW, do your nails grow that fast? I only have to chew mine down about twice a month. :D
