Anybody else going to give this one a go?

135mmX135mm punched for an MX-50.

Pretty tempting to cheat and just put the cap on with a welder.

Here's the details and entry form- http://www.lesspub.com/s3/site/pdf/afj/MailinSpecs-06.pdf

Remember when you send it in to put $0.00 value on the customs form. I think the last time I checked off "industrial sample" on the form.

How did it get moved from the white line section? I thought it might be a good white line shoe.

Hi all,

I never have seen such a shoe. What is the purpose? How does everyone plan on forging the cap, draw it like a long clip. What will be the width of the stock at the toe after making the cap 5/8 - 3/4.

The cap is just a superwide clip. I'm not sure why you would limit it to just the toe other than just holding power. Sometimes you find a use for a new skill after you develope it.

Maby like Phil said- for a foot that's missing a lot of wall from WLD. :)

The only thing I've ever used one for was a coffin fracture and the cap went back to the widest point on a barshoe to immobilize the hoof capsule.

The section should probably be 1/4X3/4 when you're done. If it came out a little thicker than 1/4" the nails will fit better.

There is a piece in the Jan/Feb issue of AFJ that gives step by step forging instructions for this shoe.

The article (and pictures) explains it better than I can but if you can't dig up a copy let me know and I'll try.

Yes...planning to start working this when we get back from Omaha.

I figured I'd let "Mr. B" ("lil' Richard" Becker) who after the 2-man in Omaha will also be known as part of "Team Vertically Challenged" run through it with me once using his recipe before attempting Chris's mag. article procedure!! :)

Hi all,

I don't get AFJ but I would be interested in how one might draw a toe cap before I tackle it. I'm thinking off the edge of the anvil with a ball peen and finished on the clip horn I squared off.

Kevin,
The method used in AFJ was to start with a piece of 1/4"x1" but you can also use1/4x11/4. Start with 11". Mark 1/8" off center, then mark 13/4"from center using an anvil devil on the edge of the stock Bump up the center at least 1/2'.

Heat each side and hammer it down to slightly less than 3/4" on each side while not touching the ceter. To make the clip, heat the toe and crease the ground side lightly with your fuller. Next bend it over the edge of your anvil hammering from the ground side. Then turn punch and finish.

Try to get hold of a copy of the magazine it goes into much more detail and has pictures. This is just a presis courtesy of AFJ.

Hi all,

Thanks I think I will get to it this weekend because winter finally arrived here the other day and hopefully won't last.

if I can get to the supply place I'll give it a try. I know already that it is more complicated than any shoe I have done before but it would be really good practice on my forge skills.

This looks like a very interesting shoe to make,I have not made any before, but it looks like an easyier shoe to make than any, in years past.
But looks are somtimes decieveing. This shoe could be made a lot of different ways, but i think forgeing it would be best as to maximize ones forgeing pionts on the score sheet. Also its much more of a learning experience, making it the hard way.
Anyway it looks like a fun shoe to make, and i will give it a shot when i get the chance.
